Villa Saraswati

Intimate and elegant

No pic at the moment -- Sorry!

What we say: 3.5 stars

If looking for a romantic and intimate place to stay just outside of Ubud, Villa Saraswati in Payogan village is a great choice.

This elegant countryside villa features only five rooms run by a polite and attentive manager and staff. Rooms have an understated touch of romance, with draped four-poster beds, subtle lighting and outdoor showers to go with practicalities like safes, fridges and mosquito repellent plug-ins. The cheaper rooms -- "Peacock", "Swan" and "Frangipani" -- are compact but should be adequate for most couples, while the larger "Lotus" and "Veena" offer plenty of space.

The grounds boast a medium size swimming pool ringed by lush gardens where you can lay back on a lounger, and a rooftop terrace with potted tropical plants that's a good option if seeking a little more privacy. The villa also runs a small restaurant serving light meals, great coffee, complimentary afternoon tea and freshly made breakfasts, which are included in the room rates. Bicycles are also available and a handful of quality eateries are found nearby.

The villa runs a complimentary shuttle with three departures per day that can take you to/from the centre of Ubud. Otherwise, the town is a 50,000 rupiah taxi ride away, 20-minutes by bicycle or a pleasant hour walk past rice terraces and art galleries. One last point: Saraswati does not accept guests under 17 years of age in an effort to keep things as quiet and serene as possible.
