The Sylvia Hotel seems to exist to cater to the needs of Indonesian business travellers to Maumere, with full conference facilities and uniform but very clean rooms.
Rooms have unusual wood floors and large, comfortable beds, as well as full Western-style bathrooms and free internet access. It's definitely a good deal for the price, which is a rare find in Flores. It's definitely soulless, but sometimes the predictability of a Hilton-like night's sleep while travelling far eastern Indonesia is exactly what you want. There's an attractive pool area and a large, shiny restaurant, and the perky, English-speaking staff can help you arrange travel onwards in Flores. The Sylvia is definitely not geared to backpackers or foreign travellers — don't expect them to help you set up a scuba expedition or a dive trip, although they can certainly assist with your next corporate motivational speech. It's located on the far end of town next to the bus station. They also have a property in Kupang and Labuan Bajo.
