Arimid Guesthouse
Feeling old

What we say:
We're really sad to see Arimid decline as it has done in recent times from one of the better options in town to one of the poorer. The painted rattan bungalows located towards the slow boat dock are as basic as ever, but they are starting to look a bit unloved with some basic maintenance issues starting to appear. The feel of the rooms here is unique for Huay Xai and mixes things up nicely compared to the concrete monoliths closer to the centre of town. Each wooden-floored room here comes with a spring bed and a tiny hot water bathroom with a sink. It's not a bad spot to relax in after the slow boat journey – it's just that it doesn't offer the same value as it once did. Perhaps worth a look anyway.

Little Old but Nice
The rooms and bungalows are over their prime but still very special as they are built with wood and atap leaves, which we think is much better than those concrete monoliths that are newer in town - after all, we're in Laos! Do beware that the room facilities here won't be as new and as nice as the other newer gh's, but we don't mind. And the owners: very witty and nice, you can feel he's young at heart :-) Gave us very useful bus tips on getting to Chiangrai from here. If I come back to this town, I would stay here again.

Friendly and honest
Stayed here for one night before the slow boat. Owners were lovely, spoke good english with a quirky accent and gave us honest advice about buying slow boat tickets. Room was nice, bathroom was ok and there was a nice communal area outside the bungalow. Very close to the slow boat pier and the breakfast and food to take on the boat were nice. All in all a good place to stay.

Romantic bamboo bungalows
Take a tuktuk to Arimid when you cross the Thai-Lao border by boat. We decided to walk, because we thought it wasn't that far while carrying our big backpacks in the sun... When going to the slowboats for Pakbeng/Luang Prabang, it's just a short walk. The bamboo bungalows are small, a bit damp and you need a mosquito net. But it's also cosy, romantic and the chairs and tables at your veranda are nice. We were sick for 2 days here and the friendly English speaking owner advised us for a hospital and which farmacy to go to. He also told us not to buy a slowboat ticket from him (!) or any other tourist office in town. Just go to the slowboat landing and buy a ticket at the office. There are always tickets and you pay much less.
