Thaveesinh Hotel
Ban Neu, Huay Xai
Thaveesinh is centrally located, and has mid-sized, clean and well-looked after rooms featuring the best amenities in town. Each room has a bathroom with hot shower, and cable TV. Air-con rooms also have a fridge. Four of the air-con rooms also have Mekong views, but there is a shared balcony... more

Friendship Guesthouse
Huay Xai
The rooms at Friendship Guesthouse are fine: clean and brightly lit, with a bathroom and hot shower, with fascinating decorations, such as Chinese-style synthetic curtains and fringing on the sheets. The highlight is undoubtedly the rooftop balcony which has no furniture but an almost 360 degree... more

Arimid Guesthouse
Ban Khone Keo, Huay Xai
Arimid is an atmospheric cluster of bungalows, closer to the slow-boat pier than the centre of town. Bungalows are adjoined by small balconies in groups of two or three. Made of dark wood and stained rattan, they're attractive and prettily furnished, although the rooms do have a slightly damp... more

Sabaydee Guesthouse
Huay Xai
Sabaydee Guesthouse has clean and comfortable rooms with a fan, bathroom and hot shower. The beds are hard as rocks (even by Lao standards) but the bedding is crisply clean. Four rooms have windows overlooking the Mekong, but try not to get rooms on the first level as you will hear the television... more

BAP Guesthouse
Huay Xai
BAP's rooms are pretty small and basic, with no sheets and no furniture. Some rooms have a shared bathroom, while some have a private bathroom with hot shower. Staff are not particularly friendly. Standard backpacker fare is available at their restaurant. They also sell boat and bus tickets, and... more

Thanormsab Guesthouse
Ban Keo, Huay Xai
Thanormsab has very clean tiled rooms, which have very little character, but are quite pleasant nonetheless. All rooms are fan-cooled and have a hot shower. The rooms do smell strongly of air freshener and cleaning... more

Oudomphone Guesthouse 2
Huay Xai
Oudomphone 2 is a family-run guesthouse with largish, clean rooms in a dark house with ornate furniture in the shared spaces. Rooms are standard, with fan, simple furniture and a bathroom with hot shower. The rooms smelled unpleasantly of cleaning fluid, but this would pass with some fresh air.... more

Phonvichit Guesthouse
1.5km out of Huay Xai
Phonvichit is set right on the bank of the Mekong River, a small guesthouse and restaurant attached to a little garden overlooking the river. Rooms are basic, but quite clean, fan-cooled and with the choice of either a bathroom inside or shared. It's a 1.5km walk to town, so nearby choices for food... more

Keochampa
Huay Xai
The basic, clean rooms at Keochampa are unremarkable. Beds have no topsheet, so a sleepsheet or sarong is a good idea. There are fan and air-con rooms, with bathroom and hot shower. Staff are Chinese and speak neither English or... more

Huay Xai Guesthouse
Huay Xai
Huay Xai Guesthouse is very basic, with simple rooms and bathrooms that have hot water but are not particularly clean. The beds have no top sheet, and the blanket is undoubtedly not washed between each use -- a sleep sheet or sarong is advisable. All rooms are fan cooled. There is a big open area... more

Phetdakham Guesthouse
Huay Xai
Phetdakham is a little way out of the tourist and town centre and comprises eight basic rooms with a bed, fan and outdoor shared bathroom in a Lao family's house. The toilets and hot showers are separate, but not spectacularly... more
