Outhaithany Guesthouse

Slightly run down, popular with groups

No pic at the moment -- Sorry!

What we say: 3.5 stars

Very popular with group tours, these character-filled bungalows are a couple of kilometres out of Sam Neua, on a small hill opposite the airport. The locations make this a slightly less popular choice for travellers. There is a restaurant with large windows looking out in one direction over the airport, surrounded by rice fields. The other direction opens out on a small garden where a tame deer gambols and begs for snacks from diners. The menu offers a selection of Lao food as well as a few western favourites such as french fries and pancakes. The bungalows come in two styles -- faux log cabin and mock tudor. All are pretty rundown, although some are in better condition than others, with damp stains on the walls and a musty smell. Otherwise they're ok, with clean sheets, and private bathrooms featuring hot shower and western toilet. The guesthouse organises treks and tours, rent minivans, and sell their own locally-grown red tea. The staff here do speak good English, but the whole experience is a little cold. We didn't really find a good Laos welcome when we visited.
