Description
In the centre of town, right behind the market, Long Ma is a tall building, holding a large number of rooms. The entrance is dark and dour, leading through to row after row of plain, square concrete rooms. The majority share fairly clean bathrooms with flimsy doors, holding a squat toilet and either with a hot shower or cold bucket wash. A small number of rooms have their own bathroom, with cold shower and squat toilet. A big balcony upstairs has a town street view and a seating area.

Kham Xam Guesthouse
Sam Neua
Touted in most guidebooks as one of the best options in Sam Neua, this guesthouse is indeed very clean, with generous-sized rooms graded and priced accordingly. The largest rooms are pleasantly done with a few pieces of furniture, a fan and private bathroom featuring squat toilet and hot shower.... more

Bounhome Guesthouse
Sam Neua
Tucked tightly into a very narrow laneway, this relatively modern guesthouse offers very clean, but smallish rooms decorated with mismatched sets of furniture. Private bathrooms have a hot shower and western toilet, all with an attractive powder pink and blue colour scheme. Toothbrushes and... more

Kaem Maen Guesthouse

The Sam River runs in a curve, with the market and a number of restaurants and guesthouses along one side. On the quieter curve sits Kaem Maen Guesthouse, a family-run establishment with a number of varying rooms available, each with its own character. Some are in an old wooden building, upstairs... more

Keosithong Guesthouse
Sam Neua
A newly-built guesthouse, Keosithong has concrete rooms which are fan-cooled, clean and simple. All have bathrooms with hot shower and western toilet. When we visited they were experiencing flushing problems, which they were hoping would be rectified... more

Outhaithany Guesthouse
A couple of km out of Sam Neua
Very popular with group tours, these character-filled bungalows are a couple of kilometres out of town, on a small hill opposite the airport. There is a restaurant with large windows looking out in one direction over the airport, surrounded by rice fields. The other direction opens out on a small... more

Phan Sam Guesthouse
Sam Neua
Phan Sam is a small, rabbit warren-like guesthouse with teensy concreted rooms decorated with a few sticks of furniture. It's pretty clean, although it reeks of stale cigarette smoke. Rooms are not too bad but won't win any awards. Shared bathrooms have a squat toilet, and apparently hot shower... more

Phet Phousay Guesthouse
Sam Neua
Directly across the narrow laneway from Bounhome Guesthouse, each level of this tall building has a sitting room and small balcony. Steep stairs leads out onto a rooftop balcony with great views over the town. Phet Pousay's rooms are differing sizes, but generally large and bare, with a creative... more

Phou Thong Guesthouse
Sam Neua
This centrally-located guesthouse is clearly a private house that has been slightly adapted to accommodate paying guests. It is small and dark, and entrance is gained down a narrow dirt alley. The family members are obviously slightly surprised by the appearance of prospective guests, and it is... more

Phou Luang Guesthouse
Sam Neua
The front of this guesthouse is a noodle soup and grilled pork shop, which does smell a bit. It leads through to a two-storey building, with seating area and small balcony upstairs, which looks out on to the main street. Rooms are quite clean but a bit smelly. All have fans and mosquito nets. Two... more
