Phaykham Guesthouse

Pleasant rooms, good price and hot showers

The foyer area of this guesthouse has been converted into a Lao-style disco. Barely separated from the other half of a large room, there are boards on the ground to designate a dance floor, and the walls are lined with booth-style heavy sofas. It looks like the perfect place for prosperous Lao men to sit and sip their Johnny Walker. It was hard to tell on our last visit if it actually gets regular usage. The rooms at Phaykham are pleasant and clean with a few pieces of furniture, fan and grubby bathroom with western toilet and hot shower.

No disco?? - 13th June, 2005
To our utter disappointment, the disco's gone. In its place an oversized lobby with two ice cream freezers chock full with dubious radioactive coloured lollies. We had three, each and blew Kip 6000. We felt that the authorities were clamping down on 'undesirable western vices' or at least someone comes up with a more innovative means of clubbing, like the neon pink nightclub near the airport. Since it was May, we naturally gyrated/pedalled to any white building with air-con compressors outside. The rooms are clean, white bed sheets and lo & behold a DVD player hooked up to a fake Sony TV! With the budget blown on in-room entertainment, the bathroom amenities suffer. Loose taps, sink and a gaping hole for water run-off. If you don't have the runs or like long showers, be thankful.

not very clean, TV didn't work - 15th August, 2007
I got a room with private bath for 30,000 kip. The floors and bathroom wern't too clean but the sheets seemed to be. There was a TV in the room but nowhere to plug it in and when I asked if it worked they said no. Not too bad for what I paid (I didn't negotiate, that's the price they told me) but the staff was about as friendly as a bag of snakes so I only stayed one night.
