Vilay Guesthouse
Free WiFi and yummy breakfast

What we say:
In a big white house with blue shutters, Vilay guesthouse has been around since 2001. Eleven rooms come with or without attached bathroom, and the rooms in the back of the house now have optional air-con. Rooms vary in size, but all have windows and are bright and airy. Guests can use the free WiFi and common area with a TV, DVD player and computer terminal. A courtyard surrounds the house and has a cosy reading area that doubles as a breakfast nook. It's not included in the rate, but they serve excellent eggs, toast and jam made from tropical fruit. Note that hostel website rates are higher than walk-in prices.

Short but sweet
Due to some mess up on a hostel website, we ended up in a double room with private bathroom rather than a twin room with shared bathroom. They tried to charge us for the difference, but we didn't pay it in the end (their fault, not ours!). The owners were friendly, it's close to the nightmarket, but there's nothing particularly outstanding about this place...

Overall a great stay
We originally booked in here for 1 night and ended up staying 2&1/2 weeks! It's not perfect, beds are hard and the plumbing in our room was a bit temperamental. However, we found Vilay & family great, they were hospitable and friendly. The communal area is a good place to relax and meet other travellers. Free wifi is a bonus too, plus a great bookswap. Also close to night market, boat ramp and amenities.

Stayed one night
I had booked a 5-day stay, but checked out after one night. The courtyard entry was not very clean -- this should have clued me in. The non-smoking room reeked of cigarettes and the bathroom smelled like urine. The bathroom was moldy and the sink leaked and had no stopper. The lights above the bed did not work, and there was no top sheet or blanket on the bed (I had to ask for one and they seemed a bit put out about it.) The room was dark and depressing. Bed was not only hard -- which I can deal with -- but lumpy. Possibly the worst accommodation experience of my life. Contrary to what they say on their website, they do not treat you as family, but actually seem rather indifferent to your presence! For $3 more I checked into the Rattana Guesthouse across the street, and had a much better experience.
