Somjith Guesthouse
One of the best value option in town

What we say:
Our top pick in the Ban Hoxieng area, Somjith offers two buildings of clean and comfy rooms. Rooms in the new dark wooden building have hardwood floors, big windows and fixings like air-con and satellite TV. The upstairs rooms share a big wooden balcony with a street view of the quiet neighbourhood. Ample tables and chairs make it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the free coffee and tea on offer. Most rooms have attached bathrooms with hot showers, but some in the original building share facilities and have an accordingly lower price tag. Run by friendly and efficient folks. One of the best value rooms in town especially if you can snag a corner room with two walls of windows.

wood panelled rooms, aircon and free bananas
I checked out four other places before choosing Somjith, hey I was in no rush! This place had way nicer rooms than much more pricey joints! I stayed upstairs in a lovely room with air-conditioning - yeeha! There was a TV but who needs one? I liked the tea and coffee making facilities on the shared balcony, this meant I could also refill my water bottles with boiled water which was handy. Staff were friendly and very polite when I came back bang on midnight curfew and they'd already locked the gate, I called out super quietly and the guy came out and was very polite even though I'd clearly woken him up. He was also friendly when I woke him up at 5 the next morning to check out, I really appreciated that because I was sad about leaving Laos and I was able to leave on a really pleasant note. Also, there were *free bananas* I loved grabbing one on my way out in the mornings after my comfy sleep in my clean soft bed.... I'd go back ... now..

Overpriced and unpleasant
Arriving from Luang Nam Tha by bus in the evening, it was better to book a room the day before. So we did at Somjith Guesthouse, after reading Travelfish reviews. On the phone, everythings seemed to be ok, a double room with window, private bathroom and hot water, for 150 000 Kps. I believed it was the normal price in Luang Prabang. When we arrived after 10 hours bus trip, we had a huge suprise. the room had no real window, a low ceiling and choking atmosphere. Finding an another room in the city after 7 pm, was almost impossible. So we decided to stay for the night. Of course, I told my feeling to the owner which did not appreciate. On the next morning we moved for another guesthouse that we have discovered in the evening : Oudomphong II Guesthouse. Located in the same area, Oudomphong II is a quiet place where you can find double room with bathroom for 110 000 Kps. The rooms are small but there is a large common balcony and a garden on the ground floor, with tables, free tea and coffee and Wi-fi. The owner is a kind Lao man who speaks Lao, english and french. I highly recommand this place.

Friendly and clean
I took a room in the old building-double bed,a/c,cable tv,clean(80,000kip). Rooms in the new building were 120,000kip and looked very nice but the only one available had water leaking down in the bathroom and I rejected it. But for the water problem I would have certainly taken it. They weren't aware of this problem but it was repaired within 24hrs. Very friendly and helpful staff. Ban Hoxieng has accom. all around and some others that I canvassed were more expensive. It is around the corner from the night market & runs down to the riverfront. I was quite happy staying here. Free bananas.

Nice neighbourhood
Stayed here for a few days early December at which time paid 120000kip for a double in upstairs part of the ''new'' section. Everything was fine clean room , soft(ish) bed, shower worked fine .We had TV and aircon although both not really necessary. Balcony looks over pleasant garden setting, you're on a quiet lane and still only a minute walk from the mekong

Nice clean rooms
We stayed ere in Feb 07 and were initially given a double rooms downstairs for 800BHT. Nice and clean, with a big bed and soft duvet - we had a great sleep here. We then changed to a better room upstairs with a balcony for the same price. Same big bed and clean sheets. The toilet isnt attached but is clean with a warm-ish shower. The prices seem to havew gone up now - 800BHT for a shared bathroom and 1000BHT for a private but we'd definately stay here again.

Two times a good choice
Somjtih offers different rooms in a very clean house. This year, 2006, we had the smaller one of the rooms with balcony in the first floor. It has a bathroom outside, sharing with three other rooms The walls of the two rooms at the balcony are concrete, you will not be disturbed by other guests. The bathroom is ok, everthing is clean and working. The room costs 60.000 Kip. Last year, Nov. 2005, we had a room in the first floor with attached bathroom for also 60.000 Kip. The walls were made out of bamboo, which carries the sound from the neighbours. Also not a bad choice. The family is absolutely friendly and helpful. After looking several guesthouses in the area again the best value for the money.
