Villa Sokxai

Very good mid-range choice if like firm beds

Luang Prabang has very few guesthouses in this price range, and Villa Sokxai (previously known as Sok Xai Guesthouse) is one of them, but probably not the best value. Recently renovated, the rooms are now air-con throughout and are nicely done, with TV and individual bathrooms that are very clean with a hot shower and Western toilet. The only drawback is, like many guesthouses, the beds are very hard. A front balcony looks out over Wat Sop and Wat Sene, making it a perfect place from which to discreetly watch the morning monk procession. A larger back terrace has gorgeous views out to the Nam Khan river.

Nice but spartan - 20th December, 2005
Sokxai is a very clean and well furnished guest house in a great location opposite a temple. You can hear the gong and the monks during the night. It's pretty cold at night in December in Luang Prabang and there's no heating, so be prepared. Also there was a power cut lasting hours and the water was cut for a short time. Don't let that put you off though, it's a good place.

High season12 months a year - 13th June, 2005
The Sokxai's rates are $25 year round and justifiably so for the amenities and the location. If you get a discount , it could be due to some micro management reasons like, or most probably the mood of the guy behind the reception. The fact that their cable TV was one day old and still wrapped in plastic did set my mood right...

Friendly staff, good location but just alright - 17th November, 2008
The location is ideal, centre of town, bang opposite a wonderful complex of temples and the staff is friendly. I got a prompt reply when I got in touch with them using the traverlfish form online. However, the room is just OK for $30. My bathroom, for example, had a toilet seat that was elevated so that was a bit weird. I only stayed a night so it worked out but I think I paid more than it was worth.

TRY SOKXAI 2 - 21st June, 2007
Good mid-range choices are hard to find in Luang Prabang. The second Soksai location, Sockxai 2 at the foot of Phou Si Mountain, is great! Wonderful, helpful staff and intereting nearby surroundings (try the Phou Si Gallery for beautiful art and excellent food) make it my favorite guesthouse in Luang Prabang.

Good choice - 7th June, 2006
Stayed here for 3 nights, great location about a 10 minute walk to the centre of town. Loved being across from the temples and hearing the monks chanting their prayers in the early evening. Guesthouse was clean and the beds in our room upstairs were soft. Great balcony upstairs to sit and read or indulge in the peace and serenity of this beautiful place. Staff friendly and very helpful.

A bit overpriced - 12th January, 2006
Downstairs rooms are now US$25 and upstairs $30. Sokxai staff are friendly and the rooms are very clean. We found it a bit overpriced but so is all the accommodation in Luang Prabang. A few of the fitting were broken which was a bit poor for the price.

Stayed here for one night -- good position, clean, and quiet. The best place we stayed in Luang Prabang, and very good value.
