Chihtana Guesthouse

Basic and cheap in a convenient location

The well-located Chihtana lies down a small alley between the main road and the Nam Khan, tucked among far more expensive lodging options, just a bit northeast of Villa Santi. Staff often hang out in the seating area out front, greeting guests as they come and go, and playing the guitar with friends. Rooms are basic, with a large bed taking up most of the space, and the walls could do with a fresh coat of paint. Most are fan-cooled. Some rooms come with a private bathroom, others share one with Western toilet and hot shower -- not the cleanest in Luang Prabang. The nicest rooms here sport private bath and air-con at a very fair price compared to the competition. Be sure to look at a few rooms before committing as they vary greatly in size and quality; one room with private bathroom lacks a proper showerhead, offering only a faucet for washing up, while others are fully equipped.

Good but prices up - 10th January, 2007
Staff friendly and helpful although not always available, good English. Room with own bathroom good but standard for $10. Room clean but little space. Bed was good and firm with decent pillows, towels okay but have your own handy. Quiet area, there was some construction in the area so noisy during the day but quiet at night. Bathroom small but clean, flush western toilet with hot shower although hot water doesn’t last very long. Electrical outlet. You can leave your bag at reception after checking out for the day for free, but know about leaving your bags for a couple of days. No internet facilities but a couple of internet cafés close by. No restaurant but a variety to choose from, most restaurants quite expensive though, a vegetarian buffet at the night market is the best value for money you’ll get in Luang Prabang. Don’t know about laundry since we didn’t have to do any at that stage but sure they have. No international payphones that we saw but there are places that provide international call services. Laos has no ATMs! You can draw money from certain travel agencies but a bit expensive and they only give you Kip which is difficult to exchange for other currencies.
