Pathoumphone is an old budget guesthouse in an area renowned for upmarket options. Its location on the banks of the Nam Khan is an anomaly in this price range and those wanting a spot on the river on a backpacker budget will find this difficult to beat. Rooms are basic and come with a saggy yet hard bed and hardly anything else – the hot water bathrooms are shared here. Some of the rooms have a nice outlook over the river and we'd recommend asking for one of these or else you might end up getting one of the darker ones with a poor aspect. Free WiFi is available, but quite sketchy in the rooms. Still, you can't really complain at this price point.

A bit of a dump

We arrived late so ended up stuck here for a night. The room was dark, dingy and extremely basic. The fan was noisy and the bed very uncomfortable. At 70,000 kip we thought it was cheap for Luang Prabang, until we found our next guesthouse (the Nam Sok), which was fabulous (modern, clean, air con & internet) for 80,000k. I would advise people shop around for better value.

Lovely staff, stunning location

Lovely guesthouse with a stunning location, right by the river and a 2 min walk from Mount Phusi (which boasts amazing sunsets & rises). But what really makes this place special is the staff. The family who run it invited us to eat with them most days (and try their fried wasps and grasshoppers) and kept refilling our glasses with Beer Lao!! We were made to feel so welcome. The boy on reception, Deng, went out of his way to teach us Lao and to go to the pharmacy for us when we needed a medicine. Rooms are basic, but on the large side, and clean. Good value for what you are paying. Staff will let you keep your bag in reception if you plan to do a trek. Would 100% recommend!
