Khoun and Khone Guesthouse
Rejuvenate your soul

What we say:
It's hard to say what we love more, the guesthouse's charming rural setting, its gracious hosts Khoun and Khone or the friendly cats and dogs. Set against a backdrop of jungle and rolling mountains, accommodation is in wooden bungalows with double beds, private balconies and attached Western bathrooms with hot showers. K&K will quickly make you feel at home on their farm, speak great English and can arrange everything from meals to village homestays. Located outside of town -- and not really at a walkable distance -- staff are happy to ferry guests around as needed and for free if within Luang Prabang city limits. This is a charmingly rustic getaway and many guests end up staying longer than planned. It's a place for complete relaxation away from Luang Prabang itself and not for those seeking something do.

excellent and charming
We spend a few days in this charming guesthouse. The brother of mr. Khoun was waiting us with a real old (1971) open Jeep at the mekong after the boat trip coming from Pakbeng. The bungalows are situated in a garden near the jungle. As the GH is at a 15 min. ride from the city centre, they bring you free, once a day, by the Jeep to the city. Mrs Khone cooks excellent (larb fish!!!). Very recommended if you can miss the evening rush in LP

Excellent
You should stay here. Although we were a little nervous about where we were going when they picked us up in town, we were delighted with the destination. Bungalows are rustic, quiet, and a welcome change after the guesthouses in town. Location is great. Quiet and serene. Tours did seem a bit pricey, but probably worth it for the individual attention and ability to customize to your schedule and desires. Food was spectacular, especially the laap and the curries. If bugs freak you out, beware the bathrooms - they are somewhat open-air, and you will have visitors (we had large spiders and a slug). But, if bugs freak you out, you are probably not going to Laos. This place was really, really superb in every way.

Very nice
We had a great time at this place. Nice family, great location, good food. Their tours are a bit pricey but you can co everything on your own if you want to.

Great place
A very nice place, outside of Luang Prabang. Very nice owners. Do the trip to the waterfall with them!

Perfect
Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 5 nights in April 09 and after spending our time there trekking, seeing the town and walking along the river, we wouldn't ever stay anywhere else. It was perfect. Khoun and Khone couldn't be more accomodating if they tried and the rest of the family all help out along with the dogs and cats. The place was perfect and it was never a problem getting into town. Stay out here and see the real Laos, you won't regret it.

Idylic Countryside Setting: NEW EMAIL!
PLEASE NOTE: EMAIL HAS CHANGED - USE: khounandkhone@hotmail.com WEBSITE: www.khounandkhone.hrorbit.com is excellent with up to date information. See end of review for up to date prices. This beautiful guest house is set just outside Luang Prebang, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is an absolute must for anyone visiting the area. Lovely spacious wood and thatch bungalows with broad verandas are arranged over a sloping garden full of fruit trees and fan palms, each with a large private stone bathroom and hot water. The beds are huge with high slung mosquito nets and every bungalow is lit with gorgeous paper lanters and has a fan. But the real gems here are Khoun and Khone, the lovely couple who run this guest house with their family, which you will soon feel a part of. Khoun is infectiously excited about everything and Khone cooks the most delicious Laos food served with frosty beers in their thatched restaurant. Nothing is too much trouble and the grounds and bungalows are kept beautifuly clean and well maintained. At a moments notice, Khoun will grab his keys, shout 'Lets Go!' and take you to town in his very cool open top jeep and collect you whenever suits, and they offer this service any time of day, free of charge. We were here out a little out of season, so they kindly put their motorbike at our disposal, which was a real treat, and it helped us see some of the lesser known villages and waterfalls in the area. They both know the area intimately and share their knowledge freely and with excellent English. Although we mostly took advantage of the setting to relax after a hectic run in Vietnam, a variety of tours can be arranged and personalised, and Khoun is an experienced trekking and biking guide. The couple are very much involved in the community, and whenever they take guests to remote hill villages they put aside a generous percentage of their fee to buy reading glasses, books, clothes, stationary and meat for the villagers. They are also involved with rural projects, such as connecting villages to water supplies, and purchsed the land behind theirs to save the monkeys and trees from slash and burn. It is the sort of hands on responsible and sustainable tourism that most 'Green' businesses could only dream of. The food prices are very reasonable, cheaper than in town and much fresher and tastier. Some of what you eat will have been picked from their own garden. Breakfast is included and includes Western options and delectable Laos noodle soup. They really understand families. Khoun talks about how to make kids happy and parents relaxed. There are already sandwiches and salads on the menu, and he tells me of his plans to build a wood fired oven for fresh bread and pizza. The prices are different to those quoted on Travelfish, high season bungalows are $25, low season they are $20. Still increadible value. Like most people we extended our stay more than once. Come and see why, you will not regret it.

Lovely stay
Be forwarned prices have risen and a stay at K&K's is now $25US high season. It's a kind of balancing act between staying out in the countryside with such superb personalized service and staying in town closer to all the action and indifferent service but more amenities at these rates. All that said I did have a very nice time there and my initial booking was extended from 3 nights to 6 as I decided to spend my accomodation dollars for the personal touch offered by Khoune & Khone. Khoune is a very funny, happy (always singing) passionate man, and his wife equally lovely. They were always willing to take you into town and offer service when asked. Rooms are on the rustic side but comfy - I loved having my own little deck to hang out in. My only real negative comment is that the sheets aren't large enough and kept coming untucked so I always found myself sleeping on the bare mattress by morning.

Experience the real Luang Prabang with Khoun and Khone
Since 2 months I am staying at Khoun & Khone bungalows and enjoying my cosy bungalow overlooking their beautiful garden and the surrounding hills. Khoun and Khone are the best hosts I ever met and they made my stay here unforgettable: driving around in their jeep to a hill tribe village, celebrating Lao New year in town, enjoying Khone's typical Lao dishes and some lovely BBQ's in the garden. They really made me feel part of their family during the 2 months I stayed with them and I can only recommend everyone to spend some time in one of their lovely bungalows!

a little late (we were here November 2007) but still wanna say what a good place this was a bit far from town but khoun the wonderful ladyboss of the resort brings you anytime with the original jeep, wich is an expierience at itself, the place is surrounded by beautiful nature the lady can cook, yes she can hope to come back here again someday Wim and Janneke van Beveren the Netherlands

Nice but not for everyone
We booked here based on the glowing reviews but it was just too far out of Luang Prabang. In the rainy season you need a jeep or a very determined tuk-tuk driver to get in and out and it takes about a half hour of bouncing around. In the dry season you could probably do it yourself on a hired motor bike in 15 minutes. The place itself is lovely (although the rooms are not mosquito-proofed) and the hosts are charming and accommodating - we had booked for three nights and they could not have been more helpful in finding us alternative accommodation even though we paid for only one night. If it was closer to town it would have been delightful.

Great place to stay
We arrived at Khun and Con's at the beginning of January for 2 nights are still there 3 weeks later. I agree with all the previous comments and Con's cooking is very good. Their phone number is 020 7707665 - if you can't get through the first time keep trying as the phone reception is not always too good.

This is a truely delighful place to stay - and reasonably priced. The bungalows are simple but comfortable and the food is delicious. A little bit out of town but easily accessible. Khoun was brought up in Luang Prabang and is a great treking guide. Khone is a superb cook who can do Lao food or western if you prefer. Be sure to get a ride in their Jeep!

Developing and not losing the flavour
Two new bungalows have been added making a total of 6 plus the house. A kitchen and reception area have been added. This is a remarkable place certainly out of the hubub of the town centre but easily accessible. The food is good. The service is very accomodating. Highly recommended for those who want some country quiet.
