The Chang Inn
A memorable stay in antique-filled rooms

What we say:
In a warm yellow building, this Thai-owned hotel has taken every detail into account to create a memorable stay. The rooms are a sunny yellow and stuffed with unique wooden furniture, art and antiques. Modern bathrooms feature rain showers behind shower curtains and tiled floors. Plush seating areas are scattered about, the most sumptuous being the second floor balcony. The absence of TVs may deter some, but the best show in Luang Prabang—the tak bat—is on every morning at 06:00 and passes in front of the hotel. Internet is free for guests and of course, is set in a charming, comfy corner.

Way over rated!! Poor value!
We stayed in the Chang Inn before finding the Alounsavath Guest House house. At a quarter of the cost of the highly over-rated, tiny-roomed, poorly designed, expensive Chang Inn, we stayed in Phon's beautiful, clean and well designed rooms, complete with copious amounts of hot water (and a powerful fan to draw out the steam, so your clothes will dry), very comfortable beds and pillows, air conditioning that actually worked well, a nice spot to eat breakfast right on the Mekhong, and Phon, who is one of the nicest people we met in Laos, which is a country full of very nice people. The rooms at the Chang are tiny, the shower did not drain, we blew out the circuits when we plugged in the bedside reading lamp, there was no room to put your bags, and the people were so meticulously slow at everything from check-in to storing your valuables. When we told them we were checking out early because we found the room unacceptable and over-priced for the quality, they threatened to charge us for the cancellation fee. You can't go wrong with Alounsavath (or almost any other of the high quality guest houses that abound in Luang Prabang)! The only problem is that you can't book on-line. Call Phon, the owner, when you get to Laos to book your room. 071-212-615
