Le Calao is set high up in a sprawling French colonial building across from the Mekong. Their restaurant terrace affords diners beautiful views of the river and coast. Inside, the breezy reception has an old-school, almost Casablanca feel. With just a few rooms spread over two floors, all are generously sized and take full advantage of the riverside location. All rooms face the water -- and have balconies to soak up the winning views -- with interiors that are airy and crisp white with intricately carved woodwork and delicate duvets. Bathrooms are huge but strangely decorated with a seashell motif that doesn't jive with the simplicity carefully laid out in other spaces. Rates include taxes and breakfast.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. Nice - 28th July, 2009
We stayed here for five nights and were the only guests. The place has 5-6 rooms that are nice, but nothing spectacular. We checked the place out even after reading the OTT review in the Travelfish guide: Reviewer obsession with 'duvets' made us think that the place was too precious. But it's nice. We found the rooms furnished plainly, far from the Sino-Portugese elegance Travelfish described. The building and balcony was set back from the street, insulating you from the moderate street noise. The place is definitely overpriced at US$70 per night, but the staff are pleasant, earnest and accommodating. Breakfasts included. With all the midrange competition Le Calao will experience when several nearby places open, they will need to upgrade. One upgrade needed is the backup of sewer gases into the bathroom. Man! A couple of nights... the STENCH!
The key to Le Calao's attraction is the neighbohood location. It's close to the boat landing, close to Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Sene, Wat Nong, close to Tamarind restaurant, Monument Books, Tum Tum Cheng Restaurant. It's a very nice, local residential neighhourhood ambience getting rarer and rarer in old Luang Prabang with all the construction of guesthouses and conversions going on.
