Description
On the road perpendicular to Luang Prabang's busiest night-life scene, the Shayada is a cosy spot with nine well-appointed rooms. Those upstairs offer a bit more character with balconies overlooking the street below or the palm fields behind. All have air-con, TV, and private bathroom in a comfortable setting with ample room to spread out. Comfortable beds are simply outfitted with white sheets, though the splash of colour from the silk sashes strewn across them is a nice touch. Paper and wood-carved lanterns provide ambient lighting and contribute to the tranquil feel of the rooms here. Bathrooms are clean, but certain fixtures have been neglected and appear to have gone without dusting since the guesthouse's opening in 2007. Hot water is touch and go. Double rooms are bigger and more extravagant than their twin counterparts and are further topped off with an extra nook to read -- or for a third to sleep -- in, making them a great option for families. Breakfast is included and served on a nondescript patio out front. If rates in their short low season are indeed as low as they claim, rooms are a steal from July to September.

Sayo Guesthouse
Sotikoumman Rd. Ban Xieng Mouane, Luang Prabang
Sayo's few rooms are often full, particularly in the high season. It's no surprise, as they are lovely. A French colonial building, Sayo is in the old quarter of town, and a lot of effort has been taken to decorate it in an appropriate style, with classically simple and unfussy pieces of furniture.... more

Clean and simple, the Rama Hotel offers good value for Luang Prabang. It is centrally located, with air-con rooms, all with bathroom and hot shower, fridge, telephone and TV. Villa Sokxai
Sakkarine Rd, Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang has very few guesthouses in this price range, and Villa Sokxai (previously known as Sok Xai Guesthouse) is one of them, but probably not the best value. Tumtum Cheng Guest House
Ban Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang
Right next to the gorgeous Wat Xieng Thong, Tumtum Cheng is in the middle of the old French colonial quarter. Lao Wooden House
Khounxoa Rd, Ban Wat Nong, Luang Prabang

Villa Sokxai 2
Phousi Rd, Ban Aphai, Luang Prabang
The younger sister to the first Villa Sokxai in the centre of town, this small hip spot is just across from Luang Prabang's most vibrant night-life, though rooms manage to block out the noise when it's time to sleep. The building is painted a vibrant yellow and an impressive inlaid stone facade... more
