With an unbeatable location and boutique hotel feel, the Ancient Luangprabang is a solid midrange choice. Guest rooms -- each named after an animal of the Chinese zodiac -- are spacious and bright, though the lack of a lift may be an issue for some. As is the trend, the decor alternates between wood and creamy contrasts with a few well-placed splashes of colour here and there. Some may find the open bathroom layout disconcerting, while others may find it romantic -- either way, you and your travel companion are bound to see a lot of one another (thankfully, toilets are enclosed). The included breakfast is served on an airy third-storeyterrace -- a great spot from which to observe the busy street below. Just steps from Phousi and the night market, travellers are hard-pressed to find a more central spot, but that can also make for a noisy stay -- ask for a room at the back.
