What we say:

Amid the cluster of guesthouses straddling the bank of the Nam Khan, Cold River is the most backpacker-friendly. Fan rooms are breezy but basic with tiled floors and reasonably soft beds. Guests have the option of bathrooms inside or outside the room, with all passably clean and coming with hot showers and Western toilets. Rates include drinking water, bananas and a home-cooked dinner every Sunday, but the real draw is the river view. Shell out a couple of extra dollars for a room with a balcony, or kick back in the common areas and watch the river drift by.

Warm welcome at the Cold River

The owner and family that run this place are very friendly and I was excited to return here after my loop of the north dropped me back in Luang Prabang to catch a flight up to Kunming. Free fresh fruit greeted me each morning, and each evening the guests (many Japanese) would sit out on the front porch chatting with the family and laughing. The room was very clean and quiet, and bathrooms were shared, but very well maintained. One note - strict on the curfew - they really don't appreciate you coming in late. So, if you are enjoying early mornings in Luang Prabang and don't plan for late nights this is a great spot off the busy end of town.
