Tucked away down an obscure, quiet laneway, Sokdee Guest House is hard to find in its upmarket local residential area, which is still near all the tourist essentials and the Mekong River. Rooms are spotlessly clean, all include bathroom with hot shower and -- miraculously for Laos -- relatively soft beds. They've upgraded a bit and also now offer air-con rooms, some with balconies and cable TV. Bicycles are available for rent, and they do laundry and sell drinks. A good option in this price range, though prices skyrocket in the high season.

Not Clean, Noisy, but not all bad - 21st February, 2010
Nice location, tucked away in a small lane. The entrance says ''Quiet Rooms'', which is BS, because the main entrance is located next to a carpentry, where they saw wood from 7:30 till 16:00 on weekdays. The reception is with a smile, but only few words English spoken. Run by a complete family who wander about and live in the guesthouse (some sleep in the reception area). We paid 150.000 Kip for a Double room with Airco (didn't really cool) and Fan (better), TV and private facilities. The room we had was not properly cleaned, towels smelled like chloride and the bathroom had leaks in the sink and toilet. First day my girl took a shower she smelled like chloride as well (I skipped a day), after that the chloride-smell was gone. Second day the carpentry started, which made allot of guests complain. The reception smiled, but couldn't solve the noise pollution at all. Third day we found a cockroach in the bathroom. I sprayed and bottled it and brought it to the reception, who smiled (again) and threw it in the garbage... Next to all above, the guesthouse is fine, but I wouldn't recommend. TV was good, loads of foreign channels. Bed was nice and soft. Allot of travelers we met (more then 10) had stomach issues after their stay in Luang Prabang. I don't know if this is the water, food poisoning, airco, flu spreading or something totally different. It's probably not the guesthouse, but since staying there I need the toilet in hand reach.

Not bad - 10th February, 2010
Stayed at Sokdee Residence which is owned by the same people as the guesthouse but is on the main street. When we went to the guesthouse we found the staff really aggresive but walked round to the other building and the staff were very friendly. Stayed in a room for $20 per night, across the courtyard from the posh $50 rooms. The room was basic but fine, hot shower, free water and so on. There was also lots of space to sit outside and read or chat to other guests.

Great Value - 28th March, 2007
Stayed here for three nights and the owner with, what appears to be, his extended family were always very helpful. We had a twin room, with hot shower, in a seperate building for $16. They're still extending and we could be looking at close on to 50 rooms in the near future.

It has changed in two months! - 19th December, 2004
Stayed there the other week - high season rate in US$12 a night. Staff were unfriendly and overcharged us.
