Malida Guesthouse
Professionally run, but not the best value

What we say:
Set outside the tourist zone, Malida occupies a cute white house with a green tiled roof. There isn't much in terms of furniture or style, but rooms are spotlessly clean. Rooms come with air-con, but they do feel quite budget which isn't in keeping with the higher than budget price. There are two shared balconies, one overlooking the sleepy street out front, and another in the back. Service is professional and rooms are cleaned daily, but prices still seem high for what you get. Rates include a breakfast of baguettes and eggs, best enjoyed in the garden.

Wonderful place to stay
I stayed at Malida for about 10 days for $20US a night in a double air con room. It was fantastic and included a light breakfast. It is situated a couple of blocks from the night markets and has a couple of excellent little diners close by. The service was equal to anything I have experienced in Asia, including luxury hotels. The manager (I am embarrassed to have forgotten her name)could not have been more helpful and accommodating. I will be back in Luang Prabang late 2010 and will be staying here again, highly recommend, 9 out of 10.

Not that quiet...
The place is clean and tidy. The people are ok. Price changes at will as it does in most places. There must be a new bar nearby as after 3 nites my wife and I moved to a quieter local. Although off the beaten track the ''boom, boom, boom, of a bar resonated until about midnite (curfew in Laos) every nite. Found a nice one by the river which was quieter and lower priced. Almost as nice. Called Cold River Guesthouse 856-7-252-810. Nice people and some rooms overlook the river. Cheaper than Malida. Only distraction is the 8-10 planes that fly over to the airport during the day. Actually both guesthouses are in the direct flight path.

Solid Flashpacker Choice
Small and well-run is right. We liked the vibe of this family run guesthouse, located in a residential area of the city. Our room was clean, with two large beds, hot water shower, and air-con. The $15 rate also included breakfast, although we traded breakfast one day for two push bikes. The daily maid service and fresh towels was a nice touch. I imagine there must be better value elsewhere in town, but the comfortable feel of this place keeps us coming back.
