Riverside Guest House
Simple, smart choice

What we say:
Despite all the new bungalows popping up in Muang Ngoi, the simple bungalows at Riverside remain popular thanks to backpacker-friendly prices. Wooden interior walls give each of the bungalows a more finished feel and a mosquito net hangs above the big beds. The bathrooms are basic but clean with a squat toilet and cool shower. Each bungalow has a small balcony with the quintessential hammock for laying back and enjoying the river views. Riverside is very close to the boat landings and there have been some reports of break-ins here, so it's best to not leave your valuables in your room.

Nice view but.....
Not to be confused with the "other" Riverside that has the restaurant, this one is located further down the main street away from the boat landing. This place features very tired and somewhat dirty bungalows that are in an amazing location for their hammock views. Paid 25,000 kip ($3.00) and would not have wanted to spend any more based on the condition of the units. For some reason the village was having their end of monsoon season festival while I was there, even though most other villages had theirs the previous week. It was great to watch the fireworks and the general fun -- unfortunate though the "fun" carried over to the entire night, with very loud music being played until 0430 hrs. Not much fun for those of us who came to take in the peace and quiet from our bungalow's hammock!

Great value
There might be smarter accommodation in town now, but this is a comfortable choice. The tiny restaurant serves great food (try the Spring Rolls) and cold beer. Prices for both food and accommodation seemed to be below the average, making it a very good deal. The lady who runs the place is a lovely character and gently persuasive (''I think you should stay one more night...'' - we did!). Payment is in Kip only, but the guesthouse next door will change dollars. Still no hot water here, but you can get a steam bath and hot (bucket) shower at the other end of town for 15000 kip.
