Aloune Mai Guesthouse
A lovely, tucked away spot
Off the main road, Muang Ngoi
Luang Prabang Province
Description
Signs from the main road point encouragingly down the dirt path that leads to the hidden treasure of Aloune Mai. Though it feels quite set apart from the rest of Muang Ngoi, it is less than a five-minute walk to the centre of town, leaving you with the best of both travel worlds -- convenient and central peace and quiet, though admittedly, in Muang Ngoi there is not so much to get away from. Indeed you feel worlds away as the path narrows and people become less frequent while chickens and butterflies become more so. When you finally emerge, your reward is an overflowing garden speckled with hammocks and a sweet little house. There's not much to recommend these rooms over any other in town as they're similarly outfitted with private bathroom and plank wood floors, but the location is a charming respite from the repetitive nature of the main road.

Banana Cafe Guesthouse
Overlooking the river, Muang Ngoi
The best of the very basic, Banana Cafe has a choice of individual bungalows or adjoined bamboo rooms overlooking the river, although the view is slightly obscured by banana palms and other foliage. Bungalows are connected by a maze of planked wood and are among the cleanest in Muang Ngoi, of a... more
Lattanavongsa Guesthouse
At the boat pier, Muang Ngoi
The impeccably clean rooms at Lattanavongsa have inspired a revolution of sorts with regard to accommodation in Muang Noi. As the first guesthouse to offer en-suite bathrooms, it set the accomodation bar high. Years later, it is still at the front of the pack, and though rooms aren't perched... more
KaiKeo Bungalows and Restaurant
Overlooking the river, Muang Ngoi
'Relax on the riverside at the end of the street,' says the sign at the entrance to KaiKeo Bungalows. Views are terrific, and hammocks on the large balconies are perfect for relaxing. Standard bamboo bungalows are a little dark but are otherwise passably clean and sizeable. The shared bathroom is... more
Ning Ning Guesthouse
Overlooking the river, Muang Ngoi
Following in the footsteps of Lattanavongsa Guesthouse, Ning Ning is moving away from the standard bamboo bungalow by the river (of which it has a handful) and has added two blocks of adjoined rooms that surround a grassy lawn. The adjoined rooms are spacious and feature huge windows, decorative... more
Phetdavanh Guesthouse
On the main road, Muang Ngoi
On the main road, Phetdavanh is much more in the style of guesthouses in other small Lao towns than the Muang Ngoi tradition. A radical departure from the basic bamboo bungalow, rooms are all in one large concrete building. With shared bathroom facilities and cold showers, the rooms are smallish,... more
Riverside Guest House
Muang Ngoi
The bungalows at Riverside Guest House are among the nicest in town. Wooden interior walls give each of the large rooms a more finished feel. Mosquito nets hang above comfortable beds while hammocks hang on the wide shared porches. Although the bathrooms emphasise cleanliness over sophistication,... more
Moon Guest House
In a town dominated by stand-alone bungalows, Moon Guest House's single square building (it's not really a house) retains more of a communal feel. The eight rooms are cosy and dim, but not dirty. Female guests may appreciate that one of the two shared bathrooms (which are a step up from the... more
Guesthouse Talee
Muang Ngoi
'Sleeping? Eating?' These two questions posed by the welcoming owner of the Guesthouse Talee sum up the offerings at this modest establishment. Sleeping: The bungalows are small -- in the double there is barely room to walk around the bed -- and basic -- sunlight and fresh air spill in through the... more
Saylom Guest House
Muang Ngoi
Saylom Guest House greets visitors at the top of the concrete steps that lead up from the boat landing. This prime location helps to set the comfortable bunch of bungalows apart from its peers. The floor plans are more spacious than most budget lodging options and the tile in the newly added... more
