Nam Ou Guesthouse and Restaurant
The most popular backpacker choice

What we say:
Right on the riverbanks, the Nam Ou is very popular with backpackers. It has a large, pleasant balcony with river views which serves as a restaurant, and is a great place to sit and relax. Try not to look down below the balcony and the areas in the proximity of the rest of the houses, this seems to be a convenient rubbish dumping ground and is quite unsightly. Choose from a variety of rooms, all not so large and pretty clean -- if basic, and all at set prices. Some have bathrooms inside, either with hot or cold water, and some do not. The shared bathroom has a hot shower and toilets are squat style. Electricity runs from about sundown to 22:00. There is enough power to run the lights through the night, although nothing else will work. Some rooms do not have fans. Staff are friendly and speak reasonable English, however their knowledge of the local transport is outdated and slightly wrong.

Cheap, Cheerful and Honest
Conveniently placed for the slow boat and the madcap ride to and from Dien Bien Phu this guesthouse should suit most budget travellers. They may not have the cleanest of bathrooms, pretty smelly actually, but they work. The beds are comfortable and the rooms clean and secure. If it is too hot request a fan but beware as they don't have enough for every room. Drinks and food, both very well priced, on the balcony with the river view are worth any inconvenience of walking up a few wooden steps. We were charged 50,000 Kip for a twin/double and that seems to be their standard pricing for the moment. Get the owners to show you where the water level rises to in the rainy season, you will be amazed!

Basic but ok.
Located up a steep flight of stairs from the river. Can also be accessed from the top of the hill via the road. Follow the signs. Rooms and attached restaurant have a good view over the river. Easiest place to eat in town with a varied english menu although don't be surprised if you're given someone else's meal! English speaking staff sometimes around. Rooms are clean enough and adequate. Western scoop toilet, no sink, hot shower. Close to the river if you want to catch the early morning bus to Vietnam. We paid 50,000 Kip for a double in March 2010.

Prime location
When the bus trip from Vietnam blew out to 12 and a half hours with 38 people in 21 seats, and we arrived in the dark, we were in no mood for looking around - Nam Ou was offering rooms and we took them. The guesthouse is right by the river, but it's still a bit of clambering around to get up to the rooms. We took a double with private bathroom for 50000 and a single without for 25000 both in the old building. The rooms were OK with comfy beds, but the electrics were a bit scary. I didn't manage to get hot water to work. The balcony restaurant was comfortable and served great food & drink at a good price. About 10pm the town power cut out, but they seem to have a secondary supply which at least keeps some lights going.

A good place
We stayed here for 3 nights in Dec and had stayed before 2 years earlier. Other places in town look good too but this has the advantage of the balcony with stunning views of the Nam Ou and riverside life. It seemed slightly less friendly than 2 years earlier - we wondered if the reduction in numbers was a serious worry - but it's still a good place with decent food. After the first night in the old building we moved to one of the new rooms on the balcony beside the restaurant - good, reliable hot water and a western style loo.

Rowing down the Nam Ou!
Here's the kind of adventure you can experience on the Nam Ou river : rowing down on a wooden boat! This part of Laos is amazing! I've spent 2 weeks there, and you can read a few lines (in French) about my fantastic trip from Phongsali to Luang Prabang : http://deuxbecs.uniterre.com/68552/1.+Corsaires+du+Nam+OU.html
