Vanaloune Guesthouse

Not the best value for money

Vanaloune is in a very busy spot -- one of the first places you'll see close to the old bus station, at the intersection in the middle of town. The entrance foyer is darkish, but an attempt has been made to actually decorate, and the pelt of a dead animal hangs on a nail in the doorway. Two kinds of rooms are on offer. Those with a bathroom are plain but fine, although compared with other places in Phonsavan they're not the best deal for the money. They are pretty clean, fan-cooled, with a western toilet and hot shower. Cheaper rooms are small and dark, with no windows. They smell dank, although they're fan-cooled and have clean sheets with water and toilet paper supplied. Shared bathrooms are clean, housing a squat toilet and hot shower. A shop out the front sells alcohol, wine, snacks, cigarettes and MSG.

By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure.
