Clean and cheap, but unexciting
Phonsavan
Xieng Khuang Province
Tel: (061) 312 099, (020) 561 329

Description
Tucked away behind the bus station, this unobtrusive guesthouse is easy to miss. It's not particularly worth hunting high and low for, but is a good cheap alternative if you're on a tight budget. Rooms are basic; clean but unexciting. Those with bathrooms have light and airy facilities with a cold shower and squat toilet. Those without private bathrooms share a squat toilet and cold shower. There is a hot water heater in the shared bathroom, and the proprietor intends to fix it soon. They don't have many guests, and will probably lower the price if asked.

Kong Keo Guesthouse
P.O. Box 158A, Phonsavan
The front garden and entrance to the popular Kong Keo is attractive and very welcoming. In the corner is a wooden shack that does duty as a bar, and stacked all around the grounds are loads of old bomb parts and other war remnants, but the highlight is a cozy wooden balcony, which serves as a... more

Meuang Phuane Hotel
Phonsavan
Meuang Phuane is on quite big grounds, despite being on the main street. Buildings housing the family and available rooms are to the side and back of the compound, leaving one side free for a lovely garden area, complete with small thatched huts to sit and relax under. Rooms are clean with a... more

Kou Kham Guesthouse
Rd 7, Phonsavan
Kou Kham Guesthouse on the main street has tile and concrete rooms painted an apricot colour, with a few apricot frills added for good measure. They won't win any design awards, but rooms are clean and light. Although the beds are rock hard and the shower leaks a little, this is one of the best... more

Dok Khoune Guesthouse
Rd 7, Phonsavan
They're in the middle of renovations at Dok Khoune, with a front building being erected which will house ten new rooms. The rest are in two buildings out the back, one painted a delicate shade of light blue. Two grades of room are offered, with the better being decent sized and creatively tiled... more

New Xieng Khuang Guesthouse
Phonsavan
Situated on large grounds, not far behind the bus station, the family-run New Xieng Khuang has a variety of room sizes with varying furniture but offer similar amenities. Much effort has gone into the decorating scheme in each of the rooms, with clearly imported lime-green sheets lined with orange.... more

Phoukham Guesthouse
Opposite the bus station, Phonsavan
Directly across the main road from the bus station is the simple Phoukham. Welcoming signs outside declare a wealth of services that aren't offered, such as fruit shakes, internet, overseas calls and barbecues cooked in old bomb casings. The guesthouse seems to be related in some way to Indochina... more

Phonsavanh Hotel
Phonsavan
The Phonsavanh is a large, ugly building with no character, plunked in the middle of the main street. The rooms are basic and unspecial, although relatively clean, and private bathrooms have a squat toilet and hot shower. Staff are not at all helpful and don't speak English. They would rather sit... more

Vinh Thong
Phonsavan
The entranceway to the popular Vinh Thong is filled with a gallery of war remnants, old bombs, and a helmet with 'USA' painted on it. A small shop out the front sells snacks, drinks and a couple of books. Rooms are small and quite nice, if a little darkish. Brown rattan walls are contrasted by... more

Hay Hin Guesthouse
Phonsavan
The run down Hay Hin has been established in Phonsavan for years as a cheap and basic place to stay. And nothing has been done in all these years to improve either the condition or the facilities. Rooms are quite clean with clean sheets but no quilt cover. Rooms come with mosquito net but no fan,... more

Saing Tavanh Guesthouse
Phonsavan
Saing Tavanh sits at the top of the intersection, at the end of the main road. Next door is an adjoined restaurant, which serves tasty, reasonably priced food. It has a varied menu of real Lao food, including fresh cow dung and beef with pickled eel. The guesthouse is nothing particularly special,... more

Lao Phouan Hotel
Phonsavan
The Lao Phouan, named for the people who lived in the area before the Lao Loum, is a narrow building crammed in the centre of town, just down from the bus station. Rooms are small and damp but clean. One is a premium suite (despite costing the same as the others), and has a small sitting room with... more

Vanaloune Guesthouse
Rd 7, Phonsavan
Vanaloune is in a very busy spot - one of the first places you'll see on arrival at the bus station. The entrance foyer is darkish, but an attempt has been made to actually decorate, and the pelt of a dead animal hangs on a nail in the doorway. Two kinds of rooms are on offer. Those with a bathroom... more
