Phoukham Guesthouse

Simple but clean and central

Directly across the main road from the old bus station is the simple Phoukham. Welcoming signs outside declare some services that aren't offered, such as fruit shakes, overseas calls and barbecues cooked in old bomb casings. The guesthouse seems to be related in some way to Indochina Travel next door where you can book your tours to the Jars and around the surrounding area. The guesthouse is pretty clean, with unpolished wooden floors upstairs, and concrete downstairs. There are three classes of room: upstairs rooms with a bathroom, western toilet and hot shower; a couple of smaller rooms and a tiny bathroom with the same amenities. These two are fan-cooled with clean sheets, and small luxuries like soap, towels and water. Smaller dark rooms on the ground floor have cold shower but western toilet. Of these, the upstairs rooms are far preferable to the lower rooms, which are not even set up or furnished at this point. You will find plenty of touts approach you around at the new and old bus stations, many offering dizzying perspectives on the rooms in this simple guesthouse, whilst the rooms are clean and fairly good value, buyer beware, the touts will severely exaggerate the price and the grandeur.

clean and comfortable. - 7th August, 2006
Stayed 2 nights got an upatairs $4 room for $3 with 20 mins free internet. Comfortable, clean beds, luke warm shower, big room..nothing exciting but fine for a short stay. Roof did leak when it rained. We found staff very friendly and we booked our trip to the plain of jars from here.
