Phoutthavong Guest House

What we say:
In a good location close to the river restaurants and not far from the centre of town, the Phoutthavong has a lobby that's essentially a parking garage, but otherwise has surprisingly nice rooms. All the rooms have hot-water bathrooms and TV, and the air-con rooms looked and smelled clean and fresh. They even have high ceilings and little breakfast nooks. There's a noodle joint right across the street and it's a short walk to the market by the bridge. Recommended.

Clean but a bit noisy
Stayed here in May 2008 at the recommendation of the manager of Attepeu's best hotel, the (something) Palace because that hotel was full. It's clean. Which would not be so noteworthy had we not checked the rooms at several more expensive fleabags on the main road. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The Phouthavong does have hard beds and this is one of those places for which you bought a sleep sack. There are no sheets. The air-con had difficulty getting up to speed, but eventually did.

new V.I.P. bus Attapeu-Pakse
there is a new bus service (YIP) running between Pakse and Attapeu every day! In Attapeu buses start at P. Guesthouse at 9 a.m., arrival in Pakse 1 p.m., price 55.000 kip, excellent service. Bus from Pakse leaves at 3.30. p.m. , arrives Attapeu 8 p.m., tickets at Nazim Restasurant, where the bus also starts

good but hard beds
The room is OK. but the beds are very hard. Do not take a room on the ground floor if you want privacy. The curtains are see-through if your light is on.

Large rooms, great value
For 50,000 Kip the twin room was unbelievably large with a huge bathroom. It was also clean and comfortable, absolutely nothing to complain about. The staff speak zero English but are accommodating if you make the effort to speak Lao (or Vietnamese). A motorcycle tour group from Malaysia took up most of the rooms on one night, but otherwise there seemed to be very few guests. There is no noodle joint across the street, but down the same road there are some restaurants and it's not far to the river (with a goat BBQ place and some other restaurants) either.
