Description
It's hard to imagine a hotel this size thriving in a place like Attapeu, and the fact is, it doesn't. It's changed hands and been renamed numerous times in recent years, and is now under the ownership of Attapeu Travel. The grounds are still pretty crummy and overgrown, but we saw signs that improvements were being made -- including a swimming pool -- and the new management has big plans for the place. In the meantime, it has some of the best rooms in town, with a decent variety of options in the mid-range, and attracts a steady trickle of visitors who wouldn't be caught dead in a guesthouse. The hotel is very service orientated with a polite and welcoming staff -- English, Vietnamese and French are spoken. It's home to the only travel agency in Attapeu where tour can be arranged locally -- Attapeu Travel -- though tour companies in other area can arrange similar tours. Motorcycle hire is US$10 a day, and bicycles are US$5 a day. One Travelfish user describes the restaurant here as 'dire' and we definitely agree -- the complimentary American breakfast is awful, and for the rest of your meals, you'll want to head to Ban Laek Tee Neung. Between having the only travel agency in town and the only internet access in town, this place may wing up being your base of operations, whether you stay here or not.

Great value, not much soul -

Agree wholeheartedly with most of Don's review above. Room quality can be pretty variable, and apart from Mr Yae (can't remember the spelling exactly) the staff are, well, underutilised (but probably best kept that way). And yes, engaging the kitchen is not for the faint hearted. But still, the rooms are excellent value and they do have probably the best rent bikes in town. Other places are more personal, but you shouldn't be too disappointed here. Oh, almost forgot -- this place is the town wedding reception centre, so on weekends be sure to get a room at the rear.

Stayed two nights in an enormous double room with air-con, TV and fridge for US$12, breakfast included. Staff were helpful. No pool sighted. Breakfast okay, otherwise did not eat here. Would definitely go back again.

Couldn't get excited about this one. I didn't notice the upgrades mentioned above. The restaurant was dire.

So many re-incarnations!
This place has just been upgraded. New paving, refilled air-cons.

Great staff. Helpful and enthusiastic.

Aloonsotsai Guest House
Across from the Lao Development Bank
This pleasant family-run guesthouse is friendly enough, but very little English is spoken here. The rooms are clean and decent, though the air-con rooms are a bit musty. You'll pay extra if you want a TV or a fridge, or if they run out of rooms without them. Only the deluxe doubles have hot water,... more

Souksomphone Guest House
Centre of town, near the Aloonsotsai Guest House
This is a very well serviced and clean guest house. The staff are friendly and courteous and the manager, Mr Bousom can arrange guided tuk tuk (or motorbike) tours to the Ho Chi Minh trail for US$15. There are also good quality motorbikes for hire for US$10 a... more

Phoutthavong Guest House
A block from the river road, Attapeu
In a good location close to the river restaurants and not far from the centre of town, the Phoutthavong has a lobby that's essentially a parking garage, but otherwise has surprisingly nice rooms. All the rooms have hot-water bathrooms and TV, and the air-con rooms looked and smelled clean and... more

Saysekong Hotel
On the river, Attapeu
The Saysekong, built in 2004, is the only place in town with genuine river views. It's in a great location, convenient to the riverside restaurants, the market and the centre of town. It's an ambitious place, designed to give the Attapeu Palace a run for it's money, but there's no sign that's it's... more

Dok Champa Guest House
Downtown Attapeu
We found the cheapest rooms in town here, some of them quite spacious, with triples available for the same prices as doubles. The atmosphere is a little dank, but there's a nice living room area with good cable TV, and a porch area for hanging out. It's sometimes used by the prostitutes at the... more

Thanh Nga
On the road to the bridge, Attapeu
This Vietnamese-owned and run outfit mostly serves as a de-facto travel centre for Vietnamese visiting the area. The rooms are a bit of an afterthought -- decent if slightly shabby, with TVs and private baths. The second floor has a pretty nice balcony seating area, though on our visit it was being... more

Dok Champa Hotel
A kilometre east of the bus station, Attapeu
This place is sort of a travel-lodge, pretty far from the centre of town, and only convenient if you want to be close to the bus station. We found the staff here a bit frosty, but all the rooms have hot water private baths and good cable TV. The guesthouse rooms in the long-house to the right are... more
