Phout Thavong Guesthouse
Poor quality and old
What we say: 
Phout Thavong is a popular guesthouse in the centre of town which receives most of its business from tour groups. Accordingly you’ll occasionally see other foreign tourists here swinging through on their way to or from Vietnam and often bus loads of locals. It’s an older hotel with heaps of rooms in long two-storey buildings with dirty white balustrading. The cheapest rooms are a good deal and contain beds – nothing else. Bathrooms are shared. Step up a level and you get your own private bathroom with hot water and bucket flush Western toilet, but the walls are still grubby and the rooms dark and dingy. As you move up again, you get air-con but the quality of the rooms only increases marginally. It appears that the only reason tour groups come here is because it has loads of rooms, not because it’s a particularly good hotel. Unless you are going for the cheapest rooms here, give this place a miss.
