Santiphab
Well away from the mob

What we say:
Well away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Don Dhet, Santiphab is on the western side of the bridge with a selection of well-placed, pristine, wooden and bamboo bungalows running by the river. The restaurant is ok, but it's not as good a sunset point as you may imagine.

Wonderful Family
My first nights in Laos were spent at Santiphab. The location is a little odd, being on a part of the Mekong with a bit of a current, but still swimmable, and overlooking Don Khon and the French bridge. But the family is amazing. They are welcoming and kind and very friendly. Staying there was a wonderful introduction to Lao culture and anyone who thinks Don Dhet is not the "real Laos" is not looking around. Don Dhet and Don Khone are filled with extended families, like the one at Santiphab, who are working and living together, and are genuinely pleased to have backpackers' business. The result is that I always felt welcomed and comfortable at Santiphab. The family's English isn't so good, though, and luckily some of the other guests could speak enough Lao to translate. Bring a phrase book.
