Away from the crowds
What we say:
Santiphab has upgraded its bungalows over the years and now is home to a handful of solid wooden bungalows on the river right next to the French bridge. It's a peaceful out of the way place and the only noise you will have to contend with is the odd motorbike crossing the bridge, a few boats and the local chickens. Bathrooms are attached here and come with cold water showers. It's incredible to think that in around 2006, this place sold its rooms for $1 per night.

My first nights in Laos were spent at Santiphab. The location is a little odd, being on a part of the Mekong with a bit of a current, but still swimmable, and overlooking Don Khon and the French bridge. But the family is amazing. They are welcoming and kind and very friendly. Staying there was a wonderful introduction to Lao culture and anyone who thinks Don Dhet is not the "real Laos" is not looking around. Don Dhet and Don Khone are filled with extended families, like the one at Santiphab, who are working and living together, and are genuinely pleased to have backpackers' business. The result is that I always felt welcomed and comfortable at Santiphab. The family's English isn't so good, though, and luckily some of the other guests could speak enough Lao to translate. Bring a phrase book.
