Gay friendly, but don't tell his parents

Description
This new place has three cheap, but well-decorated and very clean bungalows with shared facilities, along with a restaurant on site. The location is good and private, too, with nothing much on either side. The owner here asked us to mention that this was a gay-friendly guesthouse, and that we should say that, as long as we print it in English, and not Laotian, because his parents don't know yet. Given how well-decorated the place is, we figure they already know but they aren't saying anything.

It's at about a 45 minutes walk through the ricefields from the pier in the north of the island, through the ricefields, to reach mr AEK friendly place in the south. We stayed here for 5 days and those were the most relaxed days of our really relaxed 4 weeks stay in Laos ! Mr.Aek is a really nice and helpfull guy, his english conversation skills are perfect and his cookingskills are ok, the bungalows are good value for money ! the restaurant has a great location on the mekong with a view on the french bridge. ADMIRE the handpainted rainbow-flag at the restaurant :)
Go there and say hello for us ! Jeroen and Paul from Amsterdam. O JA, you dont have to walk there like we did, he can pick you up with his boat !

Riverside is far more south and on the way to the french bridge than marked on the map in your guide.
But worth the (long) walk!

I stayed here with my friends in February and we enjoyed it very much. Mr. Aek is very friendly and caring. He speaks good English and is very helpful. The food is delicious and cheap. If you call Mr. Aek he will pick you up at the pier in Nakasang.

Having moved from the miserable Souksan at the other end of Don Dhet, this was a breath of fresh air. Our well built bungalow was well ventilated with two doors and two windows. The kitsch decoration suited the place and the atmosphere perfectly. We only intended to stay for a few days, but chose to exhaust our remaining days in Laos here. Whilst a couple of the drinks were a little of the 'over sweet Laos style' the cooking was excellent. The chicken Lap whilst being different to what we'd tried elsewhere was excellent, as were the curries and the pancakes and on and on........Mr Aek and the family around us looked after us perfectly - thanks for a very relaxing stay.

More options in Don Dhet
Noupit Guest House
Don Dhet
Noupit has very solid and secure wooden bungalows, all with shared facilities on a rather pretty stretch of the river. Very popular and understandably so, the restaurant here -- Happy Island -- is a cut above the rest even though it is not on the river. They also have internet and overseas phone... more
Mr Tho's
Don Dhet
Set at the junction of the paths across and around Don Dhet. Mr Tho's has eight bamboo bungalows set right on the water's edge with mid-sized verandas and hammocks. But the book swap here is Mr Tho's biggest asset -- easily the best one in Southern Laos (not that that is saying much). Unfortunately... more
Billees
Don Dhet
Nextdoor to Noupit, Billee's has four thatch bungalows with shared facilities hidden away behind Noupit. Clean and quiet, the bungalows have great river position and are a good choice.... more
Mr Boun Hom
Don Dhet
Mr Boun Hom has half a dozen huts -- some with private bathroom, others with shared facilities -- spread across a fairly large slice of riverfront land. The restaurant is comfortable. Be sure to check out the massive snakeskin on the wall -- they caught it in... more
Mama Thanon (Cafe Laos)
Don Dhet
The talented Mama runs this great little hideaway (previously known as Rasta Cafe) and although the huts are pretty basic thatch affairs, Mama really works her territory -- hectoring passing farangs with calls of, Hey you! BeerLao? snaring more customers than you'd expect -- perhaps something to do... more
Lamphone
Don Dhet
This very popular guesthouse sits amongst stands of bamboo and attracts a good mix of people. A very friendly and relaxed place. Lamphone has free-standing thatch bungalows set on a scenic part of the... more
Mr. Sisavath Restaurant and Guesthouse
By the boat landing, Don Dhet
Not to be confused with the other Mr. Sisavath over on the sunset side, this place only has two rooms to rent, but the restaurant offers internet, and, as the sign says, a Diving board for the brave, Happy meals for the rest. The owner, Mr Vath, does happy boat trips, happy food, runs a happy... more
Vixay
Don Dhet
Just to the south of the main boat landing, Vixay has a mix of bamboo and wooden huts, most of which are, unfortunately tin-roofed. This, combined with the largely shadeless grounds. can create a real wake-and-bake environment. Vixay runs into Khamphong just to the south and there is little to... more
Khamphong Guesthouse
Don Dhet
Khamphong has basic thatch huts which, like Vixay just to the north, have little in the way of shade. Some of their bungalows are the two-in one variety, though they do also have free-standing huts. Not all the huts had hammocks when we... more
Oudomsouk
Don Dhet
This is another basic bamboo spot with a good sized restaurant -- the bungalows here are of the two in one variety, and the family who run it seemed to be... more
King Kong's
Don Dhet
One of the oldest spots on the island, Kong's has two huts -- one standalone, the other a two-in-one job. Well away from the more crowded part of the island, this isn't a bad spot to pick if all you plan on doing is laying in your hammock watching the river slide by. The rooms are particularly... more
Sidae Bungalows
Don Dhet
Another popular but basic option, Sidae doesn't have much shade, but in its favour, has ample hammock space. The 'duplex' bungalow arrangement infringes a bit on privacy, but then, Don Dhet is a friendly kinda... more
Song Chau's
Don Dhet
This handful of bamboo huts are all free-standing affairs, but as with most in the area, essentially no frills. Ample shade helps mitigate the searing, morning... more
Mama Mon and Papa Guesthouse
Don Dhet
Another one of the very basic offerings on the sunrise side. Particularly basic, threadbare offerings squeezed onto a bit of land between the pathway and the river -- it doesn't look overly... more
Phonepasak
Don Dhet
Phonepasak has a handful of very basic two-in-one thatch huts and a couple that are free-standing. Very rickety: there are other better (and more solid options) in the area. There's a restaurant here which sits beside a great old shade... more
