Description
This place is a kilometre from the boat landing and most of the other guesthouses and restaurants adjacent to it. We found the staff here pretty surly -- their focus seems to be geared more towards Asian tourists than western travellers, and their small riverside restaurant across the street was oddly unwelcoming. Most of the rooms are in a big house in the back, way off the river, and in two smaller long houses facing each other, one of which was still under construction on our visit. It's pretty much avoidable on all counts: location, atmosphere, service and price.

Clean & functional but expensive - ![]()

) Stayed here 12/2006
Stayed over a festival weekend when the Champasak regional dragon boat championships were on, so Don Khong was heaving! This was the only place with space for me, my partner and our 6 year old boy. It was clean, quiet, staff were ok, largely Laos guests the weekend we were there. It was however probably $10 too expensive for what we got. Would pick somewhere else next time round.

Kangkhong Villa Guesthouse
Kitty-corner to the wat, Muang Khong
Set in a large wooden house back off the river, Kangkhong Villa is the best option in town for an old-style wooden place that doesn't blow your budget. Rooms are well-sized and well-furnished, with nice built-in shelves and charming woodwork throughout. Try for an upstairs room though as the... more
Done Khong Guesthouse and Restaurant
Near the boat landing, Muang Khong
This particularly friendly spot has English- and French-speaking owners, generally clean rooms and a good location. The cheaper rooms all have cold water showers which, while slightly smaller than Pon's, remain a good deal. So to are the upstairs rooms overlooking the river -- they were converted... more
Pon's Guesthouse and Restaurant
Near the boat landing, Muang Khong
The rooms here are spotless and large, with warm water showers and frilly bed covers and curtains. It feels more like a small hotel than a guesthouse, but Pon remains an amiable chap with some good information on the area. A small upstairs terrace has reasonable views over the river, while the... more
Mekong Hotel and Restaurant
Muang Khong
The cheap rooms here are a big improvement over the Phoukhong closer to the boat landing, and worth the slight bump in price -- they offer functional rooms in a two-storey wooden house and cheaper rooms in a separate building to the rear, all of which have shared cold water bathrooms. There are... more
Souk Sabay Guesthouse
Down an alley, near the boat landing, Muang Khong
This place is clustered with the guesthouses near the boat landing, but down a small alley that offers no real advantages in terms of views. The rooms here are nothing special and certainly not as good a deal compared to the other places near... more
Phoukhong Guest House and Restaurant
Near the boat landing
This small place, right next to Pon's, pales in comparison, and the rooms are a tight squeeze, but we can't complain about the price. They also have a restaurant across the street on the water, with the same menu as everywhere else -- a good place to sit and relax in the evening, but the food here... more
