Salachampa Hotel

The only genuine colonial choice

If you want genuine colonial flavour, the Salachampa is your only choice in Pakse. While comfortable, it is overpriced when compared to other options in town -- you'll get cable TV, hot showers, and air-con for a few dollars less elswhere. On offer are rooms in the old building along with others in an annexe at the rear and to the side of the hotel. The former get very good reports, while the latter are spacious and have good hot water showers but come with noisy and uncontrollable air-con and no fan, meaning if you open your windows for fresh air, you'll get the TV blaring from the restaurant at all hours. We also suffered from threatening rodent noises in the roof, which knocked off a few points as well. The small restaurant on site does breakfast. A popular choice with tour groups.

OK mid-range choice - 16th January, 2009
Stayed here twice on our recent trip to Southern Laos, first in a large double room upstairs, and then in one of the smaller doubles downstairs. Not much difference in price between the two rooms, I think upstairs was $23 and down $20, but the upstairs room was totally worth the extra $$--more comfortable and private-feeling, better use of the space and much more nicely furnished with antique wooden pieces. Large bathroom across a small hallway within the suite. Downstairs room was still pretty big, but not nearly as nicely kitted out--bathroom not as good, and the tiny TV was far from the bed, so needed to be turned up quite a bit to be audible from bed. Good, cheap cocktails and snacks at the bar/restaurant. Excellent early morning coffee and bahn mi at the Vietnamese restaurant across the street. I prefer this quieter area of town to the very busy town center, and the walk is not long. They kept our packs at no charge while we did the overnight trek along the Ta Ong Trail in Xe Pian NPA, arranged through the Tourist Info Office in town and highly recommended :)

Expensive, okay choice - 7th December, 2007
Arriving late in Pakse we wanted some place to stay for the first night quickly. The only room available was an enormous triple room for $20. It was nicely furnished and very clean, no complaints there. Not such great value for Laos though and nothing that special.

Happy at Sala Champa - 27th September, 2009
I looked at a few places in Pakse before settling on Sala Champa. Stayed two nights and was quite pleased with it. Comfortable and clean. Safe for single women. And by the way - what a pleasant little town Pakse is!

Not worth a penny - 7th July, 2009
The room we had was awful, probably was never cleaned, dust everywhere, bathroom was so dirty, if we were not that tired we would have gone somewhere else that night. we left early next morning to the hotel across the road. The man at the desk was the most unfriendly person in Laos, we paid US$13 and it was totally over-priced. We recommend everyone to stay away from this hotel.

one of our favourites - 19th February, 2008
we met the owner, speaks fluently french, was born in the house, it belongs to his family for several generations. the first night we had the suite mentioned by Lother. the rooms are very big, with nice old furniture, something special!the only drawback with the downstairs rooms is the lack of privacy if you want to keep the window open. we got a slightly smaller room upstairs (there's 3), very stylish with old furniture, polished wooden floors and a nice and spotless bathroom, well worth it's price! (so we stayed more days just so we could enjoy this properly). the upstairs terrace is accessible to all the guests but we hardly saw anybody there.

stayed one night & left - 5th June, 2007
we stayed here one night & then got out. We had a noisy room on the ground floor. The staff was not friendly at all. Breakfast was way overpriced. we found way better places to stay in Pakxe then this.

Nice looking - 6th March, 2007
Haven't actually satayed there coz the only available downstairs room at the villa had no windows (there was a window but covered from outside). Rooms at the villa are now $17, in the newer outside building $12
