Phonesavanh Guesthouse

A reasonable choice

The Phonesavanh Hotel is a bit of a hole, but the associated guesthouse down the road to the east is one of the top choices in town. It loses in the popularity sweep-stakes to the Sabaidy 2 up the road, probably because the staff are much more shy and awkward around tourists, so the place doesn't have that same 'guest house' vibe. But the rooms themselves, in terms of value for money, are much better. There's a good range of rooms on offer, and the air-con rooms with cable TV are a great option for affordable comfort. The location is closer to the centre of town than the Sabaidy 2, but on a rough dirt road in a non-descript neighbourhood, it isn't nearly as pleasant.

Phonesavanh Guesthouse reviews

Read 4 opinions from Travelfish readers

Quite Acceptable - 21st January, 2009
I stayed here because the Fang Sedon was full. It was quite clean, reasonably comfortable and generally OK, but it was a bit like staying in a highway motel. There's no communal area for guests, so you don't get the chance to swap lies, err, I mean stories, with other travellers.

Good but a little creepy - 27th December, 2009
Stayed in a room with a tv, fan, and big king size bed with hot shower for 70000 kip. The room was nice and big, the bed was comfortable, the weather was beautiful so not so hot inside the room. The first day we went out on a motorbike, and when we returned, my girlfriend commented that her bags looked differently, as she always zips her bag in a certain way. The next two days we noticed as we would both take note of the position on the zippers and the bag, only to see that someone had moved the position of the zippers. Someone on staff must have been going though her things or there is a ghost inside the guesthouse. Creepy. I also got a creepy vibe from the management. When I asked them about it of course they could not ''understand'' what I was asking about. Their english was limited.

Reasonably good for the money - 6th March, 2007
Agree with the review - reasonably comfortable rooms (hot water fan and/or a/c ones) are better value compared to Sabaidy 2, but lack the atmosphere a bit. The cheapest rooms are rather pokey with no almost windows and dirty-looking walls.
