Brand spanking new, has air-con

What we say:
This brand, spanking new place was still under construction when we visited -- only two rooms were available, but more are being added, and there may be as many as 20 rooms by the end of 2007. The expat owner and his Lao wife are clearly gambling on the rising popularity of the Konglor Cave tour to fill the rooms, and hoping to lure people away from the slim pickings elsewhere in town. It looks like they are off to a pretty good start. All the rooms are doubles -- well furnished, though the decor isn't as nice as at the Seng Chan -- most of it looks like it was ordered at Ikea. Still, they all have air-con, private, hot-water bathrooms with western-style toilets -- TVs with UBC cable television are on the way. Internet should be up and running in February of 2007, free to guests. The prices right now are at a 'special introductory rate' but expect them to rise in the future. There's a restaurant on site.

A disaster waiting to happen ,is Mi Thuna. The manager is quite mad, seriously. She advised us not to use the tourist office guides to get to the local waterfall which is just plain dangerous and resulted in us almost being run out of town by them until we managed to explain and apologise. An Australian man almost died some months prior after being lost for ten days ( See Miracle in the Jungle, ABC July 2010). She put 2 Aussie lads in the bathroom my kids were going to use then refused to reduce our tariff and when we argued she threatened to call the police, read 'local thugs'. Then when 10 of us went to pay for our appalling meals the beer prices had been written over as 3000kip more than the five menus that were on the tables. Now it's not a lot of money but it's the principle that stinks and the original table menus were suddenly missing. Again the thugs were mentioned when we all objected to this rort. Please stay at Xoxai or similar where the people were lovely. The road to Konglor is fully paved and hiring a motorbike or car would make for flexibility as there are limited local transport options and a night in Na Hin may be necessary - which is OK but a night in Konglor is far more beautiful. It's a stunning valley to Konglor, consider a boat trip at least one way to the Konglor village.

do NOT stay here
The Lao manager is chatty. She's also mad and dishonest. Seriously. She told us not to use a guide for the local waterfall walk. That nearly got us beaten up and is in fact plain dangerous. (See Miracle in the Jungle ABC TV Jul2010). She shafted us on our kids room - put 2 Aussie lads in the adjacent bathroom and refused to refund us. Threatened us with police (read local thugs). She altered the beer prices after 6 more thirsty travellers turned up ie crossed out and wrote over the price when it came to paying the bill. Again thugs were mentioned. Previous other negative blogs are not exagerated. As a doctor I can say with confidence that someone will get hurt there one day. There are some lovely people closer to the town, easy walk from market/depot.

Oh my god no !!
Please don't do it.. the most recent Lonely Planet at the time raved about this place, and fair enough, the Lonely Planet is allowed to be a bit wrong sometimes, but this was was tragic !! The expat owner is long gone and the most unfriendly woman in the world owns it now. The swimming pool is a large pit in the garden, so crap that I had to take a photo anyway. We were not allowed to use the aircon as it would fuse the whole place and they would have no power, but were charged for it anyway. We could not order any food at dinner time as the whole family had gone swimming. Deeply upset - 3 nights quickly changed to one !!

Owner is crazy!
We rented a motorbike from the owner to go to Tham Kong Lor caves, which she overcharged for (100,000 kip). We had a small accident when some livestock crossed the road, breaking the peg that passengers put their foot on. When we got back she flipped out -- yelling at us, accusing us of being bad drivers and driving too fast, all without one concern for the fresh cuts and scrapes on our arms and legs. We apologised and offered to have it fixed, but she was not at all rational about it. She dragged my girlfriend in town to get an "estimate" which went from 30,000 to 120,000 kip (in Cambodia, where we live, it would cost about 20,000 kip to fix). When we called her out for ripping us off, she said we were "bad people", that we didn't want to pay, and that she never wanted to see us again. We put 50,000 kip in her office and left. Ten minutes later, as we wound through the mountains, we realised SHE WAS CHASING US on her moto. There were no TVs, no Internet, and no hot water.

Good value
The expat owner has left, so it is now his Lao wife running the guesthouse and restaurant and some of the things mentioned above (internet and cable TV) have not materialised. Nevertheless we had a great value, very clean and modern double AC room with en suite bathroom. Mon, the owner, is very chatty and helpful if a bit impractical -- every time we ordered something she had to ride into the village on her scooter to pick up the supplies. Nice location, although it is about a 1km walk from the bus drop off in the village.
