Mekong-Kham Mouane Hotel
The best pick in town for comfort-travellers

What we say:
If you're wearing a backpack and looking for a room, the tuk-tuk drivers will take you to the Thakaek Travel Lodge. If you've got a suitcase, they'll take you here. It's a bright-blue, four-story, arch-shaped building overlooking the Mekong river, and constitutes the best pick in town for comfort-travellers and those here on business. Elsewhere in southeast Asia this would be a two-star place -- the atmosphere isn't exactly scintillating, but the rooms are clean and well-supplied with furnishings and amenities. All the bathrooms have hot water, most have tubs, and all the rooms but the fan rooms provide cable TV. The doubles increase in price according to size and views of the river -- the only place in town that offers them. The top-of-the-line VIP rooms are huge, with two-bedrooms, two bathrooms, and somewhat cheesy decor. Still, an excellent deal for the money. There's a good restaurant on site that offers Lao, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine.

Attached massage shop
I didn't stay at the hotel, but I can 100% confirm that the attached massage/sauna building right on the road is designed with the 'single male clientele' in mind. Definately not recommended if you're looking for a real massage.

Prison with a view
Bed was terrible -- I could feel every spring, pubic hairs covered sheets, water turned off at 10pm, lighting was harsh and resembled an interrogation room. The bathroom had a dwarf height door, windows would not close, the tv was in a strange position on top of fridge and the towels have suspicious brown stains on them. Staff very unhelpful and would not allow us to change rooms even though there must have been many free rooms vacant. The restaurant looked like something out of a wedding reception. Toilet paper was shrunken.

Nice!
Just my style, nicely worn out but sparkling clean. Interestingly according to their own blurb there are 61 standard plus 2 VIP rooms available. The door pattern suggests a certain uniformity. Also, no rooms have Mekong views, but the balconies do! all necessary toilet equipment provided, including a comb and cotton buds. what more can you ask for?
