Sooksomboon Hotel
Worth staying in just for yucks and giggles

What we say:
The Sooksomboon is a curious place, worth staying in just for yucks and giggles. Set in an old French-style building that used to be a police station, it's notorious for it's kitschy interior decor -- check out the orange-striped, carpeted wainscoting in the halls! Some of the bathrooms were a little cruddy, but the rooms are spacious, with high, recessed ceilings, tile floors, and good cable TV is provided here. The cheaper rooms are in a separate building and aren't as much fun. Technically, you'll get better value for your money at the Mekong-Kham Mouane Hotel down the street, but this place gives you something to write home about. All the rooms have air-con, TV, and private, hot-water baths.

I stayed in the courtyard rooms
I chose this joint because of the proximity to the river and the border boat, and I think it was a little cheaper than the blue Vietnamese joint further south. The interior room seemed really expensive to me at the time, so I stayed in a budget courtyard room. I then found a water bottle stuffed behind the bathroom mirror that someone had used as a steamroller to smoke yaba. This freaked me out so I put it in my bag and walked deep into the center of town and tossed it. Other than that, the room was fine. The girls were nice and invited me to join their lunch one day. They even generously offered (as did the nightwatchman on 2 occasions) to provide for me, at a cost, the company of a lady for the evening. I declined, as it is illegal in Laos for a foreigner to get with a Lao citizen outside of marriage. Based on the fact that the staff pandered to me and someone had been smoking speed in my room prior to me this may not be the spot for families or single women. Next time I come to Tha Khaek, and there will be a next time because I have to experience Konglor again, I'll probably try the blue Viet spot down the way or another place on the river.

at least it has style!
we had a nice big room (superior-double)and were the only western guests in the main building the 4 days we stayed. the bathroom had dripping taps and had a bit of a moist-smell but was cleaned (+fresh towels) every day. the staff doesn't speak much english but they're friendly. we could see the cheaper rooms from our window, and that was close enough...
