Tad Lo
Salavan Province
Description
This is the 'premiere resort' on Tad Lo, offering a wide variety of rooms spread out along and near the river, though only the more expensive rooms have views. It's across the bridge from the Sypaseuth and the other guesthouses and is the only place in Tad Lo with amenities like bathtubs, fridges and TVs, although the latter is Laotian broadcast only -- not much of a perk. There's also a riverside restaurant close enough to the falls to feel the spray. Budget travellers will get better value on the other side of the river, but if you're looking for a bit of comfort, this is the place to go. The resort is also building a separate lodge with its own restaurant right at the base of the actual Tad Lo falls way up at the top of the road -- it seems to be shaping up nicely, and upscale travellers might want to check it out starting in 2007.

We stayed in the Green House which was more affordable than the stand alone huts however provided the best views in the resort, perched right above the falls. Literally jump over your balcony fence and in a few moments you'll be wading in the pools above the falls edge! We normally opt for the budget options however the position of this resort compared to the cheaper options perched along the murky river bed was too good to pass up. The rooms in the Green House are more than adequate, clean and comfy double bed with mozzie net. Be around at dusk or dawn to watch the working elephants bath from your balcony. Restaurant was sufficient considering the isolation and the beer was icy cold. Highly recommended.

We stayed in one of the more expensive units, which was a fair walk down a dark trail to the restaurant. We had a huge and comfortable room, definitely on the rustic side, but with appeal. This place is not for those looking for more conventional lodging. The restaurant was just-okay, and not all that close to the falls, tho' they could be seen thru the trees.

Do not stay in cheap huts - ![]()

Do not consider the cheap bungalows they offer from $6-8. They are dark, not well appointed, and the screens are not maintained, allowing rats into the room. While we were viewing the room I saw rat droppings on the bed, and a rat ran through the window screen into the room. Unsurprisingly we didn't stay there but got a concrete room at the Siphaseuth instead, which was great value at $7.

The reception area for the Tad Lo Lodge is located about a kilometre from town along the road to Tad Suong -- signs clearly mark the way. But the lodges themselves are actually on the other side of the river, and unless you plan to gambol across the rocky falls or their rickety bamboo bridge, you... more
