Description
It's a pity that the Mekong Hotel is one of the few places in Savannakhet that actually sits on the Mekong River esplanade road -- it's mostly just a karaoke joint slash short-time place. We found the staff pretty unwelcoming, and the atmosphere a bit dismal. All the rooms have private baths, and the rooms with TV offer no cable. Tou're better off looking elsewhere.

OK for the money - ![]()

Position by the river is OK, but there is no view from the hotel rooms. My room was a very strange five sided number attached to the main building, so I was able to hear the karaoke perfectly. Room was clean and comfortable, and pleasantly large, but the service was very ordinary. On another visit, I'd look elsewhere.

Nong Soda Guesthouse
Tha He Rd, Savannakhet
The Nong Soda, also known as the Mekong Riverside restaurant, is a series of large lime-yellow concrete buildings by the river at the far north of town. Rooms are spotlessly clean and very well-maintained, if a tad charmless. If you don't mind being a little away from all the Savannakhet action --... more
Saisouk Guesthouse
Phetsalad Rd, Savannakhet
This spacious wooden and concrete house, 400m south of the promenade, is the most popular backpacker's guesthouse in Savannakhet, with a good location and a range of rooms to suit all budgets. There's a charming, rustic decorating scheme throughout, and the place has a nice atmosphere with some... more
Sayamungkhun Guest House
84 Ratsavongseuk Rd, Savannakhet
The Sayamungkhun has a lot going for it -- it's set in a large heritage building, offering a good variety of both big and small rooms with basic but big cold water bathrooms. Rooms are available in the main building and the annexe at the rear. It's an attractive place, with a good atmosphere and a... more
Anousone Guest House
Sisavangvong Rd, Savannakhet
The Anousone is set in back of a large Vietnamese-style house around a motel-style parking area. Atmosphere is not its strong suit, though the rooms are generally clean and comfortable and the staff are pleasant with some English spoken. The location, out on the main road is a long way from most of... more
Savanbanhao Hotel
Senna Rd, Savannakhet
This hotel is set in a large featureless enclosure with four two-storey blocks along with a smaller single-storey longhouse in the northwest corner. Rooms appear to be clean and well-kept though on our visit some guests were complaining about a bed-bug problem. The cheapest rooms are poor value... more
Leena Guesthouse
Chao Kim Rd, Savannakhet
This hidden-away spot was devoid of guests the two times we visited. Staff are very friendly but hopelessly unorganised. The rooms are well-sized and very clean, and all have private bathrooms, though a couple of the hot water systems we saw looked deadly. More central options are available, but... more
Savan Phatthana Guesthouse
Senna Rd, Savannakhet
The Savan Phatthana is one of the cheapest joints in town, but in terms of architecture, it was built with East Berlin firmly in mind. It's one of the ugliest choices in Savannakhet, though the broad smile of the staff helps mitigate that. Rooms are functional and cheap. A small outdoor seating... more
Souannavong Guest House
152 Sandna Rd, Savannakhet
This place is located two blocks north of the church, just south and across the street from the Savanbanhao and the Savanphatana Guesthouses. It's really a much better option than either of those two places. It's a small, family-run spot -- the cheapest rooms contain only a bed, but they are a good... more
Savan Saikong Resort
2km south of the promenade, on the Mekong, Savannakhet
This large resort looks to be a very decent place to stay if you're looking for some peace and quiet, but is really only practical if you have your own transport. It's located 2km south of the promenade along the Mekong, where the road turns to dirt. There's a restaurant on site with seating on the... more
Vilaysak Guest House
281 Ladsadanay Rd, Savannakhet
The Vilaysak is pretty far inland from the river, but the staff here are quiet friendly, and one of the staff spend years living in Sydney and speaks English quite well -- with a good, thick Aussie accent! The rooms are cheap and functional, and the location offers plenty of peace and quiet.... more
Phong Tro Ben Xe
By the bus station, Savannakhet
if you wind up making a connection through Savannakhet and don't want to go into town to sleep, there's an interesting little Vietnamese-run guesthouse right at the bus station. The cheap dorm rooms may seem tempting, but the beds have no mattresses, just thin mats and some bedding. The other rooms... more
