Ban Sabai Bungalow
Stunning spot, so-so standards

What we say:
Opened in 2003, Ban Sabai was among the first high-end spots in Vang Vieng. While neighbours like Vansana Hotel and Elephant Crossing were pouring concrete, Ban Sabai went the natural route with Lao-style bungalows set around a pond. Spacious interiors with hardwood floors, comfortable beds, and locally-made silks once set the standards for upmarket accommodation, but features like TVs and mini-bars now considered to be standard at these prices are missing and gaps appearing in the floorboards and walls let in insects. Superior bungalows are a step up with extra balcony and room space, great bathroom with a tub, and bonus toiletries. While not expansive, the grounds consist of well kept lawns, rockeries and a red-brick terrace restaurant. One anomaly is the pond which looks pretty from a distance but, on closer inspection, is quite dirty. Ban Sabai is part of the Xayoh group with popular hotels and restaurants across Laos.

Mixed experience
Impressive location, friendly staff and decent food at the restaurant. However the spooky wailing and banging noises that were kicking in overnight from the building works next door were both mindboggling and frightening.

OK Place
We paid $30 a night for one of the two rooms next to the pond. The ground of the hotel are very nice and the location is good just outside the hustle and bustle of town. However the bungalows arent the nicest i've seen. the bathroom is a joke. a big lizard made its way onto our blinds and the staff had to come in and grab it. Overall this place was fine, I don't highly reccomend it. maybe a little over priced... the best part was the crepe girl outside the entrance at night. Do yourself a favor and get one...

Overpriced, leaky bungalow
We stayed here for two nights before we were thrown out, which turned out to be a blessing. We made an advance reservation here through the Green Discovery office in Luang Prabang because we were wary of arriving in high season without a reso (which turned out to be a reasonable concern). However, we were charged a steep fee per day to make an advance booking so just booked for two nights. We made it clear that if the bungalows were nice, we would stay as long as a week. When we arrived, they didn't say anything about having to leave in 2 days. But after the first night when we spoke to reception to confirm our ongoing stay, they told us we would have to leave as they were fully booked. They didn't seem very concerned that we wanted to stay longer and we felt like we were being tossed out in favour of a large tour group (which was exactly what happened). We did find a beautiful new guesthouse (above a store) just a short distance away which was much cheaper, cleaner and more amenities. The rooms at Ban Sabai were charming, but there was no tv and no fridge, things that were standard at other hotels/guesthouses in this price range. Our bathroom also leaked horribly when it rained. There were literally rivulets of water coming in through the roof and puddles of water on the floor. The location right on the water is very scenic, but I think this bungalow operation is overpriced for what you get. There are also some recent bad reviews on TripAdvisor.com relating to rodents, which you may want to check out before you decide to make a reservation here.

Solitude amidst the bustle
This place offers refuge for those seeking solitude from the ridiculously loud music and carnival like atmosphere in town. If you want to visit Vang Vieng for its plethora of activities but are not in the least bit interested in Casino Royale in the evening; this is the place for you. An early breakfast in the hotel is highly recommended. Catch the spectacular view with your cuppa of Lao coffee.

Beautiful Accommodation
Excellent bungalows in a great location. Easy quick walk to town and restaurants (even though the restaurant there was great and same price as those on the main street). A nice escape from the Happy Pizza zoom.

Gorgeous bungalows with modern amenities, friendly staff and located away from noise of the main strip but within very short walking distance. Great views of river and mountains (quite spectacular at sunset). Fantastic value. Very minor improvements such as stronger shower heaters and better sound proofing would have made it perfect.

Fabulous refuge from Vang Vieng town
After 3 weeks in the south our arrival in Vang Vieng was a bit of a shock. It was fantastic to be able to take in the best of VV's surrounds, but escape to this riverside refuge and have a quiet drink as the sun set over the mountains. Food was really good, staff were helpful, and it was quiet & clean. Definitely a good place for a couple of nights, and gets you well out of range of the bizarre tv bars and their patrons!
