What we say:

Thavisouk is a clean, decent guesthouse with fairly simple rooms which are now showing signs of age. Rentable with either fan or air-con, beds have spring mattresses, and rooms have bathrooms with a hot shower. Thavisouk is central and convenient, presenting no special views. The guesthouse offers a number of different services: they do laundry and serve free tea and coffee, sell bus and train tickets and organise visas, and they do massages. They also sell full and half-day kayaking trips, with the same itinerary and price as other places, and one- or two-day kayaking trips en route Vientiane. When full, they'll offer a free ride to their sister operation, Thavisouk Resort down by the river.

Stay by the river

The sister location of this one is a ten minute walk or $1/10,000 kip tuk-tuk ride outside of town. The bungalows vary in price. The $15 double was good value. You can sit on your porch, laze in a hammock, or throw back beers or food in the restaurant, watching the river roll by and the various goings-on, including frequent fording by dump trucks. There is a satellite TV in the restaurant if you want to catch up on CNN or watch one of 3 copies of ''The Gods Must Be Crazy''. Good spot.

Dark and not too friendly

We stayed in a $4 room. It was dark and needed a coat of paint to cover all the mould on the walls, otherwise the rooms were big with a nice bed. The staff were not friendly at all and it was difficult to get any assistance ... we moved on to the Thavisouk Resort instead.

We five stayed here twice & loved it, Mrs Song (the owner) was an absolute delight & brilliant with the kids. Will be going back for New Year.

Great Place

I was in Vang Vieng three times last year and Thavisouk was by far the best place I stayed in. Great value rooms and very friendly owners.
