Thavonsouk
Family favourite

What we say:
Tucked away by the river, Thavonsouk is a more unassuming option than its boutique neighbours, choosing to focus on comfort over flash. Their 44 rooms were upgraded in 2008 and all have air-con, TV, hot water and private balcony. Depending on the escalating prices, rooms are set amid lovely flower gardens or on the riverfront looking out to the Nam Song and mountains. The deluxe riverfront rooms are a bit larger and also boast a bath tub, mini-fridge, and lounge chairs on their balconies. Private houses sleep up to four and are a hit with families, plus childproof fences on the resort grounds mean parents won't have to worry if the little ones want to explore. The on-site restaurant serves a mix of Western and pan-Asian fare at reasonable prices and puts on a breakfast buffet each morning (included in rate). Staff are very professional and fluent in English, French and Japanese. Thanvonsouk makes a great effort to provide any service its guests might need and currency exchange, laundry, tour service and free WiFi are all available on site.

Ok for the price
Rooms away from the waterfront are more basic and cheaper. US$12 a night. Ours was a bit damp and musty and a few fittings were held together by toilet paper. Was ok for the price. The restaurant is in a great location but stick to a beer for sunset. The food was pretty average, uncooked with rather predictable after effects. We only found a few of the staff helpfull, the owners were too busy watching TV to help and the younger staff just looked bored.
