Nam Song Garden
Cosy spot clinging to the riverbank

What we say:
This friendly spot has a handful of cosy rooms in an old house plus some stilted bungalows clinging to the riverbank. All have compelling locations that overlook the river, main party island and karsts in the distance. The structures are simple and made from natural materials, and elements like exposed brick and woven bamboo give them some character. Inside the bungalows are a large bed, fan and attached bathroom with hot shower and Western toilet. Rooms in the house are a bit musty, but otherwise comfortable with clean shared bathrooms. The garden is a lovely place to relax in a hammock or make use of their free WiFi, but once the sun goes down noise from the neighbouring bars is an issue well past midnight and thin bungalow walls do little to block it out. If you can't beat them, join them.

Smelt bad
Found the staff pleasant, but the room highly unpleasant. There was a terrible smell, which we reckon was from the gecko droppings that littered the room - it's be a good idea to do a quick sweep-out before showing the room to guests. It's also close to the island, so if you want to get to sleep any time before midnight, bring earplugs.

This now Aussie-run guesthouse made Vang Vieng the best destination in Laos. The rooms have hot water, are the best prices, and have lush surroundings. The couple who run it are so openly and friendly that I felt like I was staying with new friends. They can give you all the grassroots options to experience, like tubing and other outdoor adventures, and have the best advice on the food, nightlife, and living in Laos. Stay here for an honest and friendly experience of Vang Vieng.
