Cocoon Resort
Slightly upmarket riverside cottages

What we say:
With 40 cottages in neat lines, manicured grounds, and recreation facilities, Cocoon reminds us of a summer camp — definitely an upmarket one though, and the outdoor pool and beach volleyball court have gorgeous mountain backdrops. The cabins range from simple wooden structures with shared bathrooms to more serious affairs with air-con, TV and mini-bar. Bathrooms, even the shared ones, have hot water showers and Western toilets. Even though Cocoon is set outside the backpacker zone it's not free from the noise of their all-night partying. Prices are a bit high for what you get, but the setting is wonderful and website rates are discounted. Rates include breakfast at the on-site restaurant.

Scary
This was our third visit to this resort within a year and on this occasion we had the unpleasant experience of meeting the owner. We were initially over-charged by 30 USD for our rooms and when we brought this problem to the owners attention he went into a irrational and violent rage, screamed loudly and aggressively several times at the poor girl who had settled our bill, calling the terrified little soul ‘a thief’. In a bizarre twist, we were then accused us of not paying 5USD for drinks, even though he was holding the drinks bill, drinks money, and the equivalent of 310 USD dollars that we had overpaid for our 280 USD room bill. I refused to pay the extra money that he was trying to take, and we began to explain that we had already over paid and that we were due a small amount of money back to correct the situation. His attitude changed from ‘worryingly overfriendly’ to ‘scarily aggressive’ in an instant, we became deeply concerned for our safety and thought it best to leave him with the extra money and just get out of there. When we got into our car and motioned to leave, he tried to lock us into the resort against our will by closing the main gate. Thankfully this man was in such an unbelievable rage and intoxicated enough at 11am that he was unable to close the gate in time and we were able to get out. In the process this man threw himself on the car and attempted to punch his fist through the window. His behaviour was devoid of all rational thought and very threatening. We have lived in Laos for 5 years and are 100% sure that we made the correct decision to get out, but if we did not have a car, we would have been unable to leave the resort and get away from this man. He abused his local staff, insulted us, overcharged us, tried to detain us and then attacked our car in the space of fifteen minutes. Vang Vieng is a beautiful place but this experience really ruined a great weekend away. There are some really nice places to stay in Vang Vieng with very gracious owners - This isn't one of them
