Description
The Orchid is one of the few places that really takes advantage of its great location right on the Mekong and as a result is understandably a popular choice. The rooms are tastefully furnished and even the smaller single rooms have been given a few nice touches to brighten them up. The fan only rooms are somewhat barer and can get quite stuffy during the day. Without doubt the best rooms are the 4 at the front with small balconies overlooking the river. All the rooms have a TV. The Orchid also has a great roof terrace but surprisingly doesn't seem to want to take advantage of it. There should be less laundry and more tables and chairs. The restaurant is not overly busy but is a good meeting place and has an information board to help you plan trips or sight-seeing. Some of the staff can be more helpful than others, but the casual attitude to customer service is something that seems to pervade the whole guesthouse scene here.

Rooms are a little pricey and smell a bit funky, matresses a bit old, but the room we were in was clean. Staff very friendly, like to have a laugh. Still, there are cheaper options jsut down the street.
Stuck it out - ![]()

Booked by phone after reading recommendation in laos Rough guide. Well rough it is. I stayed in a top floor room with shared bathroom. Walls to room were paper thin, mattrass knackered. Springs poking through. Cleanliness acceptable but electric plug socket dangerous. Like i say stuck it out. But not next time.

We traveled in Laos and Thailand for 5 weeks staying in low to moderately priced guesthouses and this place was by far the dirtiest, dankest worst place. I can't beleive that anyone in the last several years could have positive things to say. We even looked at 3 different rooms. All were filthy, two were infested. Before you stay here, go to the river at sunset, fill up on Ping Kai, sleep in the street and save 16 bucks.

This place was ok but was a bit musty and old. The bathroom was pretty gross too. But it is in a good location and the staff are very nice.

First of all it must be said that this place has a great location by the river and close to the centre of town. However, the place is shabby, the owner/manager a bit vague about everything (prices, pick-ups etc) and our room was really dark and basic. The 100% synthetic bedding was about a hundred years old and my pillow had big lumps in it. I would certainly say there will be better options if you want a comfortable place to stay.
An awful dirty place - ![]()

This is an awful place even by the simplest laotian standard.
We had booked one of their ''best balcony'' rooms. The room was actually big enough even if quite squalid. No one is expecting the Hilton for 16$ but this place is even too filthy ad dirty for the lowest standard. The mattress was thin and hard with only one tiny cover that was dirty and full of little holes.
The bathroom was in disgusting conditions, with not even any basic soap or toilet paper provided. The rooms windows didn't close properly and the room was facing one of the most noisy & dusty roads in Vientiane. Even though we arrived late in the night, we checked in and out in less than 30 minutes. Would highly recommend the brand new place just 2 doors down (LV City), for a similar price, you can have a quite nice place to stay.

Simple rooms but all that we needed, and we are older (but seasoned) travellers). Location is good near river foodmarkets that were great. Air con room was good. Stayed there when we returned to Vientiane. The nearby morning aerobics class at about 6am is not to be missed, and the roof is great for a nightcap.

Friendly, helpful staff, great location. 12 USD for a single room with TV, A/C and en suite. Unfortunately there was no fan in the room and as I hate A/C and never use it (allergies) it got pretty stuffy.
The sunset view on the Mekong from the rooftop terrace is stunning.

Overpriced for what you get. Small bathroom, plain room no atmosphere. Can do better for the price nearby. Shabby bedding.

The wide, open entrance is an attractive introduction to this stylish guesthouse. The open-air courtyard outback lends a contemporary flavour to the otherwise traditional Lao design. The rooms here, around the courtyard, are definitely the best choice, with those on the left having a bit more space... more

A new, fresh and clean hotel just up from the Mekong. Oddly, though, they seem to have decided that lime green is a colour that people prefer. There are... more

One in a small chain in Laos this is by far the friendlier and better of the two in Vientiane, occupying a very central location close to the Lao Cultural Hall.
