Orchid Guesthouse
Riverside value

What we say:
In a lovely Lao-French building with arched entryways, the Orchid is at the heart of the Mekong riverside action. The air-con rooms are spotlessly clean and have a TV, attached bathroom with hot water, and your choice of one, two or three beds. Though some of the rooms are set up for spectacular river views (and you pay slightly more for them), they are obscured by bars over the windows. The fan rooms are a bit stuffy and have not been as well maintained so take a pass on these. Some Travelfishers have complained of hearing their neighbours through the paper-thin walls, but otherwise Orchid is good value for riverside.

I've Had Better
I stayed in Orchid Guesthouse in Dec 2011 with my boyfriend. This was the only hotel that wasn't fully booked so we didn't have a choice. We paid 100,000kip for a 'double' room which had two single beds, a fan (no air-con for that price) and a tv. This didn't include breakfast either. The bed sheets were fairly clean, there was a lot of dirt on the floors and behind the bed. The bed was hard and the pillows were massive - standard Asian size pillows! The electrics in the room were very dodgy, frayed wires were the tv and fan were plugged in. The shared bathroom was ok and clean and the food in the restaurant was nice - and very cheap. It was an alright place to stay but for that price I would have wanted more. I travel on a budget and stay in crumby hostels all the time so was just disappointed that I didn't get more for my 100,000kip!

BEDBUGS
Horrific. Checked in at 6pm, went to dinner and to explore, returned at 11pm to see bedbugs. When we went downstairs to complain, the desk guys told us the room had a history of bedbugs, which is why they were charging only $16, rather than a similar room priced at $18. Pathetic excuse, we checked out and demanded a refund. Didn't get one, and now you should save yourself your $16.

Communication is Key
Very good location on the river, but bars in the window spoil the view completely. We booked a 160.000 Kip Double room with private facilities, TV and Airco for 1 night, because the rest was full. The reception is totally unclear. I asked if we could check in a Fan room (90.000 Kip) for the next day... had to ask several times and they confirmed. Came back at 11:00 the next day to check out and in again, but the Fan room ''wasn't ready yet''. Again I reconfirmed twice if we could check in at 12:00-12:30 and they said ''yes, no problem!''. We came back at 12:30 and the Fan rooms were fully booked. I hate bad and unclear communication. The Double room was OK, clean, TV wasn't set right and couldn't get good signal on allot of channels. The bed was awfully hard with springs almost coming through... Wouldn't recommend this place.

Spotless room
The first thing that struck us was the cleanliness. Everywhere we looked, someone was mopping the floor/window etc. We decided to treat ourselves to the double room, attached bathroom, with air-con and a great view of the Mekong for USD22. The only bad thing was the climb up and down 5 flights of stairs. Location of this place is great. Room was extremely clean, water was hot with good pressure. Only complaint was that the walls are thin, so it can get noisy if you get noisy neighbours. Bring your ear plugs. Staff were ok, but kept asking us if we've paid - we already pre-paid.

Not Bad
Rooms are a little pricey and smell a bit funky, matresses a bit old, but the room we were in was clean. Staff very friendly, like to have a laugh. Still, there are cheaper options jsut down the street.

Stuck it out
Booked by phone after reading recommendation in laos Rough guide. Well rough it is. I stayed in a top floor room with shared bathroom. Walls to room were paper thin, mattrass knackered. Springs poking through. Cleanliness acceptable but electric plug socket dangerous. Like i say stuck it out. But not next time.

Horrible!
We traveled in Laos and Thailand for 5 weeks staying in low to moderately priced guesthouses and this place was by far the dirtiest, dankest worst place. I can't beleive that anyone in the last several years could have positive things to say. We even looked at 3 different rooms. All were filthy, two were infested. Before you stay here, go to the river at sunset, fill up on Ping Kai, sleep in the street and save 16 bucks.

ok
This place was ok but was a bit musty and old. The bathroom was pretty gross too. But it is in a good location and the staff are very nice.

shabby gaff
First of all it must be said that this place has a great location by the river and close to the centre of town. However, the place is shabby, the owner/manager a bit vague about everything (prices, pick-ups etc) and our room was really dark and basic. The 100% synthetic bedding was about a hundred years old and my pillow had big lumps in it. I would certainly say there will be better options if you want a comfortable place to stay.

An awful dirty place
This is an awful place even by the simplest laotian standard. We had booked one of their ''best balcony'' rooms. The room was actually big enough even if quite squalid. No one is expecting the Hilton for 16$ but this place is even too filthy ad dirty for the lowest standard. The mattress was thin and hard with only one tiny cover that was dirty and full of little holes. The bathroom was in disgusting conditions, with not even any basic soap or toilet paper provided. The rooms windows didn't close properly and the room was facing one of the most noisy & dusty roads in Vientiane. Even though we arrived late in the night, we checked in and out in less than 30 minutes. Would highly recommend the brand new place just 2 doors down (LV City), for a similar price, you can have a quite nice place to stay.

Great!
Simple rooms but all that we needed, and we are older (but seasoned) travellers). Location is good near river foodmarkets that were great. Air con room was good. Stayed there when we returned to Vientiane. The nearby morning aerobics class at about 6am is not to be missed, and the roof is great for a nightcap.

Excellent location on the Mekong
Friendly, helpful staff, great location. 12 USD for a single room with TV, A/C and en suite. Unfortunately there was no fan in the room and as I hate A/C and never use it (allergies) it got pretty stuffy. The sunset view on the Mekong from the rooftop terrace is stunning.
