No one can miss the peach-coloured 14-storey monolith that occupies a sandbank in the middle of the Mekong River at the southeast corner of the city. This controversial, Malaysian-owned hotel has a 50-year lease on the embankment and plans are to build a large shopping centre and supermarket on the space next to the hotel. It's firmly aimed at the mass tourist industry and business community, as well as trying to offer catering and banquet facilities for weddings and other special events. Guests can choose from river or city views and use facilities such as a sauna, steam room, swimming pool, fitness centre and spa. The rooms are all you'd expect of a hotel of this standard. Brightly coloured silks and expensive furniture abound and those on the upper floors have quite stunning views. Rooms are spacious and even standard ones boast sitting areas. Staff are professional and helpful but perhaps a bit thin on the ground, especially when the hotel is inundated with new arrivals. The swimming pool and fitness centre are open to the public for $8 per day. They also offer breakfast and lunch deals which include use of the facilities. At $10 per person, these are actually pretty good value. Check online for substantial discounts on the rack-rates below.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure.
