Riverine Hotel

Zen-like retreat on the river

Well-situated just across from the river, Riverine Hotel is a more upscale choice than your average guesthouse, but doesn't quite deliver the standard it would like to project. The reception area -- where the included generous breakfast is served -- is bright and airy with a lovely patio area. The adjacent spa fills the air with the scent of eucalyptus making this a relaxing spot to read or have a drink. All rooms have air-con, cable flat screen TV's, WiFi, and en suite bathroom with hot water, but white walls are already smudged with fingerprints and furnishings are a bit shoddy. Standard rooms are nice enough, though dark -- none have exterior windows -- but an upgrade to Deluxe takes you upstairs where the views are more plentiful. The suite -- though the term is used loosely here -- is gorgeous, decked out with a four-poster bed, crisp bedding, Lao textiles, and rich, dark woods. A computer in the lobby is reserved for guests. Though Riverine doesn't advertise price cuts for the low season, be sure to ask if you're travelling from June to August.

Small but very cozy and nice room (deluxe double). Staff are pleasant. The breakfast is not really generous but allright.
