Meldrum Hotel
Something for everyone

What we say:
Of all the budget hotels with neon signs in central JB, the Meldrum is much, much better than average. It's deceptively large -- 107 rooms are spread out over five floors -- and the rooms have been designed to accommodate everyone from solo travellers to families. All are newly refurbished with air-con, 20" TVs, sturdy chairs and tables, and comfy beds and pillows. The majority of rooms also have new-ish attached bathrooms with hot shower, but the cheaper doubles have shared facilities -- we recommend spending the extra 10 ringgit for your own bathroom. The Meldrum is on a semi-pedestrianised street (motorbikes still zip through) and opposite a busy food centre, so ask for a room in the back if you're a light sleeper. The staff are reasonably friendly and full of local advice.
