This long-running backpacker haunt has been acquired by neighbouring Johan Hotel and a lot has changed.

Most of it is an improvement, including a fresh coat of paint, renovated bathrooms, comfy new beds and TV and air-con in every room. Our favourite features are still there, including the rooftop lounge, library of travel guides, guest kitchen and a funky loft roof for guests who don't mind scaling a ladder with their luggage -- but the mellow hippie vibe and the backpackers are completely gone. While it's still pretty good value, we have to admit we liked it better before. Rates include WiFi.
