Old Penang Guesthouse
Clean and charming

What we say:
Opened in 2008, Old Penang offers solid budget to flashpacker accommodation and is very popular -- with good reason. The majority of the offerings are dorm beds but there are some private single and double rooms as well, including some with private bathrooms, but most opt for the dorms. Dorms are available in female-only and mixed and the wooden framed beds are solid and of a good standard. Shared bathrooms are clean. This hostel has a large interior common area with plenty of seating, makes for a good spot to escape the heat and has a good vibe to it. Free WiFi throughout and friendly staff round out a good deal. The private bathroom rooms go very quickly, so we suggest booking in advance for those.

Good Location, Cool Atmosphere
Prices have gone up (double AC w/ shared bath is now 50 Ringgit) but the place does not disappoint on atmosphere, comfiness and more importantly, location. Right on Lovelane, it is really convenient for walking the sites, checking out the food areas, and having a cool beer while watching the traffic go by. As for the GH, the cool common area with its high-ceiling inside covered veranda is great for hanging out for ''breakfast'' (toast with butter/jam and coffee), checking your email on the free wifi or just doing some travel planning. The TV/couch right next to the veranda were also very comfy. The rooms were smallish and basic but efficient and the A/C definitely took the edge off. Convenient shared bath upstairs and downstairs were again basic but cleaned regularly. Staff was no-nonsense, helpful and polite without any pretense.

A great respite!
Clean, friendly and in a great location, I loved my stay here and highly recommend the Old Penang GuestHouse. A/C worked well and showers (shared, but bathrooms were clean and new) were hot! If ever in Penang again, I will stay here!

Fond Memories
I'm a sucker for old worldy charm so I was instantly attracted to this place. As it turns out there are other guesthouses in the vicinity with a bit more character. However I defy them to match the staff at Old Penang who are friendly, helpful and in the case of Joe a bit crazy (in a good way) It was slightly more upmarket place than I'm used go but it was worth paying a few more RM. It was a place where I found it easy to meet other guests and generally mingle. My room was small but comfortable, although a window would have been nice. On the positive side made it easy to cool the room. The showers and toilets are indeed spotlessly clean. If ever I make it back to Georgetown I'll book here once more.
